Around The Primary

Dear Families

‘Reading is Magic’ is the theme for Book Week 2024, and our library has been transformed into the magical world of Harry Potter! The students have been enchanted by thespectacular decorations and displays.

Our Book Week celebrations started on Tuesday morning with the fabulous Book Week Parade. Both staff and students arrived in an impressive assortment of imaginative costumes inspired by their favourite stories. From Pinocchio to Captain Underpants, unicorns, colourful crayons and a giant inflatable axolotl, so many impressive and hilarious characters on display!

Special thanks to Ms Cattapan and the library team who put together a great week of activities to celebrate the magic of reading.  This is an exciting time for our students and most importantly a timely reminder for us all to celebrate reading and the wonderful power of books to transport our minds and imaginations.

Congratulations to Primary Singers and Wanju Voices for their outstanding performances at today’s Assembly and the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. We are very proud of the dedication you have shown in attending early morning rehearsals, and the way you represented the College. A big thank you to parents and grandparents who attended these performances to support the students, and who have assisted students in getting to school for rehearsals before school throughout the year. A special thank you to Mrs Haydon for sharing her musical talents with our community and Mr Johnston for his expert accompaniment.

We look to welcoming many fathers and father figures to our Fathers’ Day Mass on Friday, 30 August.  Please RSVP here https://www.trybooking.com/CTGPE

Kind regards

Book Week Celebrations

On Wednesday we welcomed our first guest speaker to the library, the amazing Tamara Moss. An award-winning author from Western Australia, Tamara captivated students from Years 4, 5 and 6, with her stories and creative processes for writing. Tamara also described how she crafted her fantastical creatures for the “Lintang” series. The students thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to create their own mythical creatures.

On Thursday we welcomed back the extraordinary visual storyteller, scientist and comic maker, Aśka.  She enthralled both students and staff with her hilarious and clever drawings and stories. Aśka showed the students from Pre-Primary, Years 1, 2 and 3, how pictures have a language, and ways they can create their own stories through drawings. Aśka spoke about the importance of using our imagination and challenged the students to have a go at creating their own comics.

Inspire Event

We are pleased to invite you to a special follow-up event organised by our Parents' Association Inspire group, building on the success of the recent talk by Karen Young. This session, titled ‘Lessons Learned from Karen Young’s Presentation,’ will provide further insights into the strategies discussed during her presentation on Building Courage and Resilience in Children and Adolescents.

Event Details:

Date: Wednesday, 28 August 2024

Time: 8:45am - 10:00am

Location: Thomas More Exhibition Centre. John XXIII College, John XXIII Avenue, Mount Claremont

RSVP: essential: https://www.trybooking.com/1271777

Join our Primary College Counsellor, Anne Murphy, along with our Secondary Psychologists, Eva-Maria Catina and Martin Emery, as they delve deeper into the lessons from Karen’s presentation. This session will explore what strategies have been effective, what challenges have arisen, and why certain approaches have worked while others have not.

This is a valuable opportunity to continue the conversation on how we can help our children develop the courage and resilience needed to face life’s challenges with strength and confidence. Your participation will not only benefit your own family but will also contribute to our collective efforts in supporting the wellbeing of all our students.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Sports News

Our Years 3 – 6 students have been very busy preparing for the Interhouse Athletics Carnival on Friday 6 September.  It is always a great day full of colour, smiles and celebration with every student earning points for their House.  Whilst we encourage all students to participate and do their best, if at any point a student doesn’t feel comfortable taking part they can opt out.  Not all the events can take place on the day so over the next 2 weeks some events will take place during PE and Sport periods, these are provided below:
