Faith and Mission

As we approach the final Sunday of August, we prepare to observe Social Justice Sunday, a tradition deeply grounded in the Catholic Church of Australia. This year, the commemoration falls on 25 August, continuing a legacy of reflection and action that has been fostered by the Catholic Bishops’ annual Social Justice Statements since 1940.

This year’s theme, ‘Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World,’ resonates powerfully with the values of our school, named after Pope John XXIII. His encyclical, Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), is a cornerstone of the statement, emphasising a peace that is firmly anchored in the dignity of every human person. The document serves as a poignant reminder that the cries of human suffering, whether near or far, must not go unheard.

Our school’s motto, 'Seek Justice,' aligns perfectly with the message of this year's Social Justice Statement. It challenges us to be vigilant in the face of truth’s erosion and to stand firm against the rise of a post-truth culture. We are called to act, not only in recognition of the injustices around us but in the pursuit of peace and truth within our community and beyond.

We are also delighted to announce that our school will be hosting the launch of this significant Social Justice Statement in collaboration with the Justice, Ecology, and Development Office (JEDO) on 5 September.

The full Social Justice Statement can be accessed here: Social Justice Statement 2024-25 - Office For Justice, Ecology and Peace (catholic.org.au).

Let us all take this opportunity to reflect on our role in seeking justice and peace in our world ‘by embracing a culture of encounter and dialogue, inspired by Jesus Christ, who is presented as the ultimate source of peace and truth.
