PHYSICAL EDUCATION & SPORTS REPORT
What an exciting Term 3 we have had so far in Physical Education and all across the school with the Paris Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Students have been learning about the Paris Olympic Games, our Olympians and famous Australian Olympic moments while celebrating the achievements of our athletes and watching them compete in replays and highlight reels most mornings. It was great to see how many cross curricular activities were happening around our school inspired by sport, including using medal tallies in maths, reading about Australian Olympians in literacy and I believe the Year 1 and 2 students hosted their own “Potato Olympics.”
Each week our Year 3 and 4 students have been learning about a different Olympic Sport such as hockey, handball and martial arts. Students have enjoyed working as part of teams and developing an understanding of how different sports and competitions work such as knockout, round robins, repechage, heats. For the rest of the term our Middle students will be learning about the Paralympic Games and Sports unique to the Paralympics with a particular focus on inclusivity and how sports and games can be modified to help everyone be involved.
Our Senior students have been learning the sport of European Handball. They have learned the basic rules and strategies of the sport and have been playing it as part of our Sport Education in Physical Education (SEPEP) unit. Each class was split into three teams which took on the name of one of the twelve countries that qualified for the Olympics. Within each team, students were assigned a duty that they undertook each week when their team wasn’t playing such as coach, umpire, scorer, timekeeper, equipment manager or media manager. As the Olympics progressed, students cheered on their team and followed the results to finally see Denmark awarded the gold medal. Our competition at school is much closer with the final results yet to be determined. It has been excellent to see our student’s confidence grow both on the court and when performing their SEPEP role.
In our Prep and Junior classes, students have been learning locomotor skills which allow them to move from one point to another. Students have played games to develop the skills of the run, hop, skip, gallop, leap, jump and dodge. Students have enjoyed putting their “PE teacher” hat on and analysing Kiddo Videos that show students just learning how to perform a skill like the vertical jump. This has helped students identify what parts of the skill are important such as bending knees and swinging arms back before take-off. Some of the students' favourite activities this term has included “Moving Walls” which works on dodging skills and challenging themselves to jump as far and as high as they can.
Sport Term 3
Term 3 is our quietest term in relation to sports participation. We have had 27 students represent our school at the Division basketball tournament with all students progressing to at least the semi-finals. The students should be very proud of how hard they trained in the lead up to the event and with how well they performed in their teams on the day.
