MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING TERM 3
As part of our work on School Wide Positive Behaviours we have been teaching and learning about using calming strategies to self-regulate.
Whenever we all experience stress or have ‘big feelings’ the ways we choose to cope, our coping skills, can be either healthy/safe choices or choices that are unhealthy/unsafe.
We all have times when we feel stressed, overwhelmed or have ‘big feelings. Examples of healthy choices might be to take a break, go for a walk, talk to a friend or ask for help. Unhealthy choices might be to yell, be physical with someone or negative self-talk.
We want to try and support our students to have healthy/safe coping skills and that starts with being able to use calming strategies to self-regulate. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you.
The first step to regulation is breathing. There are loads of different breathing strategies out there but here are a few we like to use here at school:
A great strategy to teach your child is the strategy ‘Breath, Think, Do’. This is currently being used as a strategy to support students with self-regulation, calming and problem solving here at school.
