STUDENT LEARNING

Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School

Year 3/4's in TERM 3

Writing- In Writing this term we have been learning to write letters, information reports and adding to our ability to write Narratives. The students have been generating ideas, planning, drafting, editing and revising. We have been focusing heavily on understanding the language features of each text type and using them to enhance our writing. We have loved writing letters to Olympians and information reports about an Olympic sport- it was great to tie in the Olympics to our writing!

Reading- In reading, we have been focusing heavily on strategies from the SOSA wheel that are thinking ‘Within and Beyond the text’. Students have been using their skills that are taught in the classroom to practise solving words, summarising, skimming and scanning, using think marks, synthesising and finding the main idea in fiction and non fiction texts. Students have used literal and inferential understanding to have a better grasp of what they have read in a text.

Numeracy- In Numeracy this term we have had a big focus on the different operations. We looked at Addition and Subtraction equivalent number sentences and then moved on to Multiplication and Division equivalent number sentences. Students then learned deeply about Multiplication and Division and the different strategies to solve problems, such as groups, arrays, number lines and fact families. Students have also explored Area and Perimeter and have been applying their learning practically by designing spaces such as gardens. Students have enjoyed practising using their efficient and mental strategies in all of these areas.

Spelling- In Spelling, students have been learning about suffixes, rules for using double consonants, homophones and different spelling patterns for the same sounds. Students have received explicit teacher instruction and completed various activities to consolidate their learning, including word sorts, dictations, sentence writing, word searches and crosswords.

SWPBS- Students have been introduced to the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework this year.

Integrated Studies- In Integrated Studies, students this term we have been exploring science, specifically the states of matter. Students have had the opportunity to investigate solids, liquids and gases through a range of experiments, whilst building their understanding of the scientific process.
