SAKG NEWS

Over the past fortnight we had a simple and relaxing time in the kitchen, particularly given we were leading up to concert, focusing on some good old favourites. We made a carrot and rice soup, using up lots of herbs and greens from the garden and chopped up carrots.  Not only delicious but very filling and topped with a garnish of finely diced herbs this was absolutely scrumptious. To go with our soup we made basic bread knot rolls, a great way for students to learn about the role yeast plays in making the bread rise and teaching them about kneading the bread and activating the gluten to get it nice and fluffy.  Making them into knot rolls is great for hand eye coordination and also ensures a crisp outside while being fluffy and soft on the inside. Finally, we made pancakes, a simple but excellent dessert which we served with lemon curd left over from last rotation and a home made no churn vanilla ice-cream.

In the garden, this coming fortnight, students will be learning more about soil by watching Dirt Detectives an episode of Junior Gardening Australia. To watch this fun and informative video below.

Then students will investigate the soil types in our garden, followed by improving the soil in some of our compacted raised garden beds by adding a perlite and compost mix.

In Observe and Create group students will finish a number of posters about healthy soil so we can enter them in the Soil Week competition which closes soon. In the Grow group students will be starting to plant seeds into punnets and putting them in the greenhouse to get ready for the growing season.

There are a couple of lunch time activities this fortnight as well.   Students can drop in to the garden at lunchtime to make a Father's Day gift and on Tuesday September 3rd  the younger years (Prep - 2) can drop in to the garden for a book reading by Jodie. The book is called The Message of the Dance and is a great story about bees. We may even have time to do a bee dance afterwards!!

And finally, we would like to do a big call out of any old CDs and balls of wool. Jodie is planning to do a weaving activity with some children of which requires these. If you have either of them lying around at home and not in use, we would love them. We will leave a tub at the front office which they can be put in.  Thanking you for your support!
