Year 3 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the end of Week 6. I can’t believe we are already over half way through Term 3.
We also celebrated Book Week this week - it was so fantastic to see everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters on Book Day. We also got to pair up with 2A and completed a fun Buddy Day activity. We were lucky enough to have a visit from Illustrator Marc McBride, who told us all about his career and taught us how to be illustrators too.
This week in:
Literacy
We have continued to explore some new prefixes - pre, meaning before, sub, meaning under and super meaning above. We have discussed how they change the meaning of base and root words. We have also continued our revision of the syllable types and revised syllable division rules.
As previously mentioned, our genre focus this term is Narratives. We continue to revise the structure of a narrative and have explored creating solutions to problems and writing openers that can hook a reader. This week we also began planning our narratives and have drafted our first paragraph. It has been fantastic to see the students implementing the techniques taught throughout the term so far. Techniques include ‘show not tell’, ‘three sentence settings’ and ‘sizzling starts’.
Our comprehension focus has been ‘identifying genre’, including how we can tell if a book is fiction or nonfiction. Ask your child to explain this to you at home when reading their independent reading books.
Mathematics
We have wrapped up our explicit multiplication focus and transitioned into division and the connection it has with multiplication. We have been exploring equal groups, arrays and connection to multiplication as strategies for division.
We highly encourage your child to continue to practise their instant recall of our multiplication facts. By the end of year 3, we aim to build their confidence in their 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s & 10’s
Inquiry
Last week we learnt about Captain James Cook and this week we further explored The Endeavour Voyage this week. As well as this, students have had more time to research and plan for their Stop Motion project. A reminder that all sets, characters and props need to be at school for Week 8.
Wellbeing
Friendology sessions with Mrs Tucker finished up at the end of Week 5. It has been amazing having Mrs Tucker join our classes each week, and we have been proud to see the students utilising the Friendology skills.
We spent our last sessions exploring friendship skills and healthy friendships and reviewing the 4 Friendship Facts - ask your child to tell you all about these!
With Friendology wrapped up, we continue with our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program. This week we began exploring ‘Help Seeking’, looking at factors that contribute to positive relationships and building our effective communication skills.
Important Information
Homework
We are asking for a minimum of 80 minutes of reading a week at home that needs to be logged into their diaries each night. Diaries need to be signed before Friday and brought to school Friday mornings for us to check. If your child has lost or forgotten their diary we ask that you send us an email or write their reading down on a piece of paper and sign this.
We will also continue to be setting 3 Tasks on Mathletics for the students to complete throughout the week.
Students continue to work on their characters, sets and props for their stop motion animation. Students should have discussed with their group who is making what.
Stop Motion Inquiry Project
The students now have access to information pertaining to a Stop motion animation that they will be working on this term. The outline of the task is available on Google Classroom.
