CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Reading, Grade 2 students are learning to use the important ideas in a text to explain the main idea.

VOCABULARY

The main idea is the central point or primary concept of a text or passage. It summarises what the text is mostly about in one or two sentences.

Important ideas are key points or significant details that support or elaborate on the main idea. They provide evidence, examples, or explanations that help to develop or clarify the main idea.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Take one book from your blue satchel and find out the main ideas and important ideas using the following prompting questions:

  • What are some important details that help explain the main idea?
  • What examples or facts does the author give to help us understand the main idea?
  • What information in this text is important to remember?
  • Can you find something in the text that gives you more information about the main idea?
