Mathematics

CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Mathematics, the Grade 2s are creating additive and subtractive patterns.

VOCABULARY

Additive and subtractive patterns increase or decrease by a constant amount using numbers, words, shapes or objects.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

"Pattern Walk Challenge"

Objective:

Children create simple additive and subtractive patterns using objects from around the house.

Instructions:

Choose a type of object from around your house (e.g., spoons, toys, or blocks).

Start by making a pattern that adds one more of the object each time (e.g., 1 spoon, 2 spoons, 3 spoons).

Once you've made an additive pattern, make a subtractive one where you take away one object each time (e.g., 5 blocks, 4 blocks, 3 blocks).

After creating each pattern, explain it to your parent or caregiver.

Extension Challenge:

Try using different amounts to increase or decrease by (e.g., add 2 or subtract 3).

Draw the patterns you created and write down the numbers or describe what happens in the pattern.
