Sweeney Todd Excursion
On Monday 16th September the Drama and Music departments took a group of students into the Arts Centre to watch Vic Opera's production of Sweeney Todd. For many of the students this was their first experience of a large scale professional musical production.
For those of you who are not familiar with this show, here is a brief outline of the plot:
Once, there was a barber who had it all — a happy life, a beautiful wife. But it all ended in a savage act of betrayal. Enter Sweeney Todd.
From the haunting melodies of Stephen Sondheim to the chilling narrative crafted by Hugh Wheeler, this production transports you to the dark heart of London’s Fleet Street. Witness the transformation of a once-content barber into the infamous “demon barber,” a suave and perilous figure with his rising desire for vengeance. Alongside the beguiling and eccentric Mrs. Lovett, they hatch a twisted plan — equal parts genius and ghastly. Mrs Lovett’s reputation of serving the best pies in town may be short-lived as Sweeney’s thirst for vengeance teeters on the razor’s edge.
Starring the powerhouse duo of Ben Mingay (Sweeney Todd) and Antoinette Halloran (Mrs Lovett) this is your chance to see why Time Out described them as a ‘juggernaut’ and ‘perfect’. Considered one of the most powerful, dramatic and theatrical horror tales ever set to music, this masterpiece of musical theatre will leave hearts racing and spines tingling long after the final curtain falls.
Despite the gory themes within the production the students all came out with beaming smiles and the fact they were singing the songs from the show is a tell that they truly loved the experience.
Mazenod Oblate Cricket vs Victoria Police
On Wednesday, 9th October, the 2024 Oblate Cricket training squad played a T20 cricket match against Victoria Police for the Steven Tynan Blue Ribbon Memorial Shield.
In glorious sunshine, Victoria Police won the toss and elected to bat. Their opening batters proved too strong for our bowling attack, with the team racing to 104 before Harjas Kaile (Year 9) finally achieved the important breakthrough.
Despite a few untidy errors with the ball, the energy and enthusiasm in the field were excellent, with captain Aaron D'Souza (Year 11) learning plenty about field placements. Victoria Police finished on 4/227 after 20 overs.
Mazenod ultimately struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Tarique De Mel (Year 11), scoring 22 runs, and Sanithu Palliyaralalage (Year 8), 41 not out, made fine contributions with the bat. We finished on 7/134, resulting in Victoria Police retaining the Steven Tynan Blue Ribbon Memorial Shield.
Thank you to Senior Constable Steve Fernando (MOC1993) for supporting this great initiative, and to the many generous staff at Mazenod for making the day possible.
The match was an invaluable experience for our squad in preparation for the 2024 Oblate Cup in Perth, with the team flying out on 8th December. Finally, congratulations to Harjas Kaile on being awarded the Blue Ribbon Medal for Best Player. Harjas took one wicket in a tidy bowling spell and made an impressive 52 not out.
