Maths - Calendar
Learning Intention:
To identify and read features of a calendar to find specific dates.
Learning Experience Overview:
In maths, the Grade Ones have been looking at the various ways that time can be measured. In this session, students focused on different months and how they can be presented with a calendar. Before creating their own, we discussed how all calendar pages are different as months have different amounts of days and this means they start on different days. From this exposure, they eventually went on to create their calendar page.
Whole:
Our session began with a whole class discussion about what they already knew about calendars.
Students were then shown calendar pages, for October and February.
We focused on the key features when viewing the calendar - including the days of the week, how each box has a number in it and the clear title at the top of the page that shares which month we are viewing.
Prompts:
- What do you notice about the calendar page?
- What stays the same for all months?
- What can you see that is different about the months?
- Why do you think the months might start on different days?
- Does anyone know how many days a month has? Are they all the same length?
Students were then shown a calendar template that they would need to complete in pairs or independently, with the name of the month, the days of the week, and the dates. A list of important events was also read out to the students, which they would add once the calendar page had all of its features added.
Small:
Students went off and were able to work with a partner or independently to create their own October calendar page. We kept an example up for students to refer to as they worked through the task. Once the name of the month, days of the week and the dates were added, they then needed to read the clues and add in the events happening in October.
Whole:
Share and Reflect:
At the end of the lesson, we discussed the events that we included and strategies we used to find the right dates they were to be placed on. Then to conclude we did a gallery walk of the calendars students made so they could observe other students' work.
How you might like to continue learning at home:
- Have a calendar hung up within your home.
- Add dates to a calendar with your child.
- Ask them about what events they know happen in different months.
- Create countdowns to exciting events that may be coming up.
- Quiz them on the months of the year, for example, what comes before March, or after January.
