MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP

SCARLETT BENHAM

In the second week of school holidays, I have the amazing opportunity to complete a scholarship with the Melbourne Theatre Company. The course ran over 5 days and included kids from all over Victoria. It was run by professional teachers within MTC and there were 3 guest artists across the week. We learnt about movement and abstract choreography, how to use our voices and take care of it and about set and costume design. Over the week we worked on the subject of change and how different the world is now. We did work around a play called ‘World Problems’ and on Wednesday we got to see a video of this play.

At the end of the week, we created a showcase based on everything we had learnt throughout the week. My scene included kids passing a ball and talking about childhood and high school and then being interrupted by a group of older kids from the future, where things aren’t so good. The showcase went really well and was highly rated by family and friends.

I’m so grateful I had this chance and I’ve made lifelong friends from this experience. In March next year, I get to go back for a reunion and I couldn’t be more excited.
