A classic end to the year!

Classical Club
It’s been an absolute delight to gather for Classics Club this year. Members, predominantly Yr7s, are very passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. This year the group, which meets most Fridays at lunchtime, chose to read Homer’s Odyssey. We managed to read nine books. Thanks to the Clubs’ budget and Tom Varns’ suggestion, we celebrated the year with a workshop at the Hellenic Museum. Amongst all the amazing activities, the Oracle proved too enticing for students. When the Oracle was asked whether our very own Penelope was a good weaver, we all agreed that the Oracle got it wrong!

Yr 11 Classical Studies
As a revision exercise for material culture analysis, Classical Studies students were fortunate to be invited to Melbourne University’s Object Handling Laboratory in Arts West to study Roman coins.
The excursion was the culmination of an intern placement. Ivan Shlok, an honours student in the School of Archaeology, delivered a unit on Augustan propaganda and arranged access to the lab for students. Students were not only impressed by the coins Ivana had selected for handling but the display of ancient pottery as well.
