Learning and Teaching

Year 3/4 Swimming Lessons
Over the past 2 weeks our Year 3 and 4 students have enjoyed their swimming lessons at Nunawading Aqualink Pool. They all learnt important new skills and practiced safety and survival techniques also.
They each received a certificate with many achieving skills such as:
- Step- in entry & safe exit from deep water
- Head first survival scull
- 15 metres backstroke using efficient technique
- 15 metres freestyle using efficient technique
- Tread Water for 30 seconds
- Rotate the upright body using arm sculling action
- Surface dive, underwater swim 3 metres
This is an important part of the Victorian Curriculum to practise and refine fundamental movement skills in aquatic settings, coordinating kicking with arm movements to move the body through the water using different types of strokes. We are very proud of all of the students achievements in their swimming program.
Extension Education & Tournament of Minds Showcase - 18 November
This year, a small group of students from Years 3-6 have been participating in several Extension Education opportunities at St John’s. Each week, withdrawal groups in the areas of Literacy, Maths and Inquiry have been working on projects of their choice that extend their critical and creative thinking skills and provide valuable practice in collaborating and communicating with their peers. This has been vital in building their independence, self confidence and engagement in school activities.
On Tuesday 18th November, between 2.30pm and 3.20pm, these students will be presenting their amazing work in our Extension Education Showcase.
During this time our Tournament of Minds participants will also share their learning.
Everyone is welcome to come and see what they have produced and learnt. We look forward to seeing you there!
