Year Three

 Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

Our Year 3 students had a wonderful day of learning at the Melbourne zoo! They explored how caring for animals and their habitats connects to caring for our planet and community health. Throughout the day, students demonstrated our school-wide expectations of safety, respect, and learning. Several zoo patrons even commented on their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm for learning — a wonderful reflection of our school community.

This Week's Learning

Religious Education

This week in Religious Education, Year 3 students explored the parable of The Good Samaritan. We are learning that people are responsible for the choices they make. Students focused on naming choices that keep people and creation safe, explaining the difference between fair and unfair choices, and suggesting how making responsible choices supports our community. They connected this learning to the Catholic Social Teaching principles of Solidarity and the Common Good, recognising that when we act with kindness, fairness, and responsibility, we help create a caring and just community—just like the Good Samaritan.

Integrated Learning

In Integrated Studies, Year 3 students have been learning to reflect on what animals and the zoo can teach us about health and community. During our zoo excursion, students observed how animals live and care for one another, making connections between the wellbeing of animals, people, and the environment. They described things they saw at the zoo that relate to health, explained how animals and people are connected, and suggested ways they can care for animals or the environment at home and school. It was a rich day of learning that deepened their understanding of how caring for creation supports a healthy community.

English

In English, Year 3 students have been developing their research and writing skills. They are learning to use their knowledge of text structure to navigate a text and locate specific information efficiently. Students have researched and summarised information from several sources to plan their own writing, focusing on understanding the purpose and structure of an introduction in a persuasive letter. They then applied this knowledge by planning the introduction for their own persuasive piece, carefully choosing ideas and language to engage the reader and clearly state their point of view.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Year 3 students are learning to identify different perspectives and representations on maps. They have been exploring how objects and locations can look different from above, the side, or front views, and how symbols are used to represent real-world places. Students enjoyed applying their spatial reasoning skills to create and interpret simple maps, strengthening their understanding of direction, position, and perspective.

Social & Emotional Learning / RRRR

In SEL, Year 3 students have been exploring how emotional responses can vary in depth and strength. They are learning to identify a range of emotions and describe the varying intensity of these feelings. Students have also been reflecting on and describing different situations that can lead to strong emotions, developing a deeper understanding of themselves and others as they consider how feelings can change in different circumstances.

Auslan

In Auslan, Year 3 students are learning the signs for different zoo animals and how to describe the ways these animals move. They have been practising using expressive gestures to show movement and characteristics, building both their vocabulary and communication skills in sign language.
