Years 4 & 6

Literacy
We continue to explore figurative language through our class novel, The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor. The students have been challenged to identify examples of metaphors, similes, personification and other literary devices, and explain why they think the author chose to include them in the text. This task encourages students to think deeply about how authors use language to create imagery, mood, and meaning.
In addition to this, students have started working on a visualisation activity which requires them to draw a room from the text as if they are looking through a keyhole to see what lies beyond.
We have been expanding our vocabulary knowledge with our “Word of the Day” routine. Each morning, a student selects an interesting word from The Dictionary of Difficult Wordsby Jane Solomon to share with the class. Some of our favourite discoveries so far have been spaghettification, thalassic andugglesome. It has been wonderful to see students feel ebullient about choosing a new word from the book and sharing it with the class each morning.
Maths
Throughout the semester, we’ve been starting every maths lesson with a few minutes of timed multiplication fluency practice. This quick warm-up helps us get our brains ready for learning and strengthens our number skills. By practising regularly, students are becoming faster and more confident with their times tables, which makes tackling bigger maths problems much easier. It’s been it has been wonderful to see students improving their accuracy and speed over time.
Other things to note -
We’re right in the middle of our end-of-year testing and we’re encouraging everyone to do their personal best and be proud to show how far they’ve come in their learning journey.
