Year 11 VM Students Take Action Against Food Insecurity at FareShare

Our Year 11 Vocational Major students, as part of their community project, recently participated in an inspiring excursion to FareShare in Abbotsford as part of the Schools in the Kitchen program. This hands-on experience gave students a powerful insight into the issue of food insecurity in our community and the important role that organisations like FareShare play in supporting people in need.

Throughout the day, students learned about food waste, food rescue and the impact of volunteering. Working alongside FareShare’s chef, Penny, they took part in a range of kitchen activities including preparing, measuring ingredients, assembling and packing meals, and helping with cleaning and resetting the kitchen for the next group of volunteers

Together, our students made an incredible contribution by:

  • Assembling 590 split pea curry meals
  • Opening and traying one whole pallet of chicken pieces
  • Opening 185 litres of plant-based cream
  • Cleaning and resetting the kitchen for the next group of volunteers
  •

Not only did they gain valuable teamwork, communication and cooking skills, but they also made a tangible difference to people experiencing food insecurity.

FareShare has expressed their gratitude for our students’ hard work and generosity, acknowledging the positive impact their efforts will have on the lives of many. The experience has helped our students see that everyone has the power to make a difference, no matter how small the action may seem.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 11 VM students for representing our school community with such enthusiasm, compassion and commitment.
