PREP NEWS

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Prep! Despite a few rainy mornings, our classrooms have been buzzing with excitement, laughter, and plenty of learning.

Literacy

This week, we explored the digraphs /ph/, /wh/ and /ng/. Students loved discovering how these sounds appear in so many of our favourite words like whale, phone, and song!

We continued reading and writing using Mo Willems’ much-loved stories. From Pigeon’s funny tantrums to Piggie and Gerald’s friendship adventures, the children practised reading with partners, taking turns to read aloud, and showing great listening skills.

To make phonics even more fun, we played a range of literacy games—including “Phonics Bingo,” “Wh-Word Hunt,” and “Ng Sound Sort”—helping students apply what they’ve learned in playful, hands-on ways.

Numeracy

In Maths, we continued to build on our understanding of division and sharing. This week, we discovered that sometimes things don’t always share out perfectly—and that’s when we get a remainder or ‘left-over’!

Through practical activities like sharing fruit, toys, and even counters between groups, students developed reasoning skills as they explained why a remainder was left. We’ve been encouraging them to talk through their mathematical thinking with partners, use visual supports, and record their strategies in different ways. It’s been wonderful to see such collaboration and confident problem-solving across the cohort.

Inquiry

Our “Imaginary Animal” projects are really taking shape! Students have been researching and collecting fascinating facts to inspire their unique creations—thinking about their animal’s diet, habitat, and special features.

We were also incredibly lucky to have Sarah (Rupert’s mum) visit our class with their beautiful pet budgie, Birdy! Sarah shared all about Birdy’s life, what he eats, how he keeps clean, and even how he communicates. The children were absolutely captivated, asking thoughtful questions and making real-life connections to their own animal projects. A huge thank you to Sarah for bringing such joy (and feathers!) to our learning.
