Prep Art

Hello wonderful Prep families! What a fantastic two weeks we’ve had in Art. We have now wrapped up our 3D paper-technique creations, and I am so proud of the incredible work our students produced. Please feel free to pop in any morning before or after school to admire your child’s amazing learning on display.

In Week 7, our Preppies were busy creating “Self-Portraits with a Story.” Students drew themselves and added meaningful symbols that represent special moments in their lives, favourite toys, memorable places, or important events. At our students’ request, Week 8 was spent creating bright and joyful Christmas-themed artworks. Using vibrant paint sticks on A3 paper, they explored colour, shape, and festive ideas as they designed their own unique Christmas scenes. Their creativity truly shone!

Grade 1 and 2 Art

Over the past two weeks, our Year One and Two artists have been bursting with creativity in the art room! We’ve been exploring the wonderful world of famous artists and discovering how they use colour, line, pattern, and texture to share stories and feelings.

Students jumped right into drawing, painting, collage, and some super fun texture-making activities. They’ve been experimenting, mixing, layering, and trying out new tools with lots of excitement (and just the right amount of mess!).

It’s been amazing to see them express their own ideas and proudly talk about what they created. Our art room has been full of imagination, bright colours, and budding artistic voices.

We’re excited to share some of their colourful creations with you in the photos below!

Grade 3 & 4 ART

Over the past two weeks in Art, Year 3 students have been continuing their Coral Seascapes, while Year 4 students have been working on their Springtime Landscapes

Students have been exploring how to compose their artworks by considering the foreground, middle ground, and background, as well as how scale and proportion affect the overall balance of their piece. They have also reflected on colour choices that represent the beauty of an unspoilt natural environment.

Building on their understanding of colour, students have turned their attention to how it can communicate emotion and influence mood. Through guided discussions and creative exercises, they experimented with colour combinations to express feelings and ideas, deepening their appreciation of how artists use colour symbolically to connect with their audience.

In Week 8, students began exploring how to create their own festive Christmas landscape scenes. They sketched a mountain background and then added interest by collaging with a range of red and green patterned papers. As they worked, students thought carefully about using 2D shapes and arranging their artwork to include important landscape features such as the foreground, middle ground, and background. Many enjoyed experimenting with different textures and patterns and were proud of how their Christmas scenes began to take shape.

Spanish

The past weeks, our students across the school have enjoyed learning Spanish through games, hands-on activities, and real-life language practice.

Our youngest learners have been revising key topics through fun, interactive games. Students have practised days of the week, months of the year, and shapes in Spanish, building confidence through repetition and play. These activities help them remember simple vocabulary and start using Spanish in class routines.

Students in Years 3 and 4 have been exploring cultural celebrations from Spanish-speaking countries. They learned the meaning behind these traditions and created mini piñatas as part of their craft unit. This hands-on activity helped students understand and appreciate the cultural richness of the Spanish-speaking world.

Our senior students have been practising more advanced Spanish. They have been learning how to order in a restaurant, shop for items, and hold short conversations. They have also reviewed and applied the grammar covered in previous years to build stronger communication skills.

Across all year levels, students continue to develop confidence, curiosity, and a love for language learning. We are proud of their enthusiasm and the effort they bring to every Spanish lesson.

MEDIA - with Mr. Brendan Howarth

With this being our final newsletter entry before the conclusion of our Media Unit, we wrap up a successful term for many of our classes!

Preps have made connections to narrative structures and devices through watching familiar TV shows like Bluey.

Year One students wrapped up their study of cultural stories and legends with a viewing of Hercules.

Year Two students have represented many of the IB attributes through their photography, wrapping up with "caring".

Year Three students, having represented different parts of our school in slideshow presentations have created pieces focusing on topics of their choice.

In Year Four, we completed our analysis of the TV show Thalu and its connections to Aboriginal history.

Year Five students finished their exploration how media has evolved over time with a look at photography and cameras.

Year Six have made strong connections between media and music, and the many aspects of media involved in creating and promoting films.

Physical Education

P–Grade 2: Mini-Olympics Fun!

Recently our P–Grade 2 students at Saltwater P–9 had a fantastic time as they took part in our Mini-Olympics (Timetable B). The event was full of laughter, cheering, and lots of effort  with children giving everything their all in different fun events, cheering on their classmates, and showing great enthusiasm.

Because of weather conditions, Timetables A and C were postponed. These have now been rescheduled for 8 December  we look forward to another day of fun, energy and friendly competition!

Grade 3–6: Fitness Focus & Swimming Trials

Our Grade 3–6 students have been thoroughly enjoying their current fitness unit. Across classes, students have been learning about a variety of activities including skipping, cardio-fitness circuits and endurance-building exercises. The focus has not only been on physical fitness, but also on teamwork, resilience, and trying new things.

A few weeks ago we also held trials for our Saltwater district swimming team. We had a fantastic turnout and every student showed great determination and sportsmanship.

We are very proud of the effort shown, and delighted to announce the students selected for the swimming team. Congratulations to the following:

DANCE.

As we draw closer to the end of year and to our upcoming performances, the energy and excitement with all classes and rehearsals has been absolutely amazing, as everyone strives to get the best out of each other and each session they have in the studio.

The dance studio has been very busy juggling everything from Christmas Carol classes, Year 6 graduation rehearsals, Wakakirri rehearsals for their carol performances, VSSS Christmas Carol rehearsals, and Year 7 and Year 9 enrichment classes also.

Year 7 and year 9 enrichment classes have been filming their routines around the school, ready to be edited together and presented at the end of the year. Dance Extension dancers have been practising their award winning Wakakiiri routine titled “Full Circle” to perform at the upcoming end of year Christmas Carols for both shows, along with learning their own Christmas Carol to perform also. VSSS dancers have also been learning and creating their own Christmas Carol routine to perform separately from the Wakakirri dancers for the first time this year.

We also welcome back all primary classes to the dance studio to learn and practice all their amazing routines for this years Saltwater Christmas Carols to be performed in Week 11. This is a crazy fun time of the year, and the excitement from all students and staff that have been in the studio is on another level! We can’t wait to show you all what Saltwater has been working soon! We hope you enjoy the show! :)
