Secondary Update

We are now approaching the final three weeks of Term Four, and the excitement of upcoming events is building. Recently, we have hosted a number of information sessions, both online and on-site, for our Grade Six families as well as our current Year Seven and Eight families. Science

Year 7

What a fantastic and enriching Term 4 it has been for our Year 7 Science students! We are delighted to share some of the exciting learning experiences and achievements from this term.

Throughout the term, students explored the world of forces, including how balanced and unbalanced forces affect motion. They investigated friction by conducting hands-on experiments and analysing how different surfaces impact movement. Students also strengthened their understanding of simple machines—levers, pulleys, gears, wedges, inclined planes, screws, and wheel-and-axle systems—and discovered how these tools make work easier in everyday life.

Earlier this month, students had an amazing opportunity to visit Scienceworks. This excursion included:

  • A fascinating session at the Planetarium, where students learned about Earth, space, and our place in the universe.
  • An engaging Electricity and Magnetism workshop that helped students connect classroom learning to real-world scientific applications.

Our students represented the school proudly and showed excellent curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the visit.

Currently, students are applying their creativity and scientific understanding to design and build their very own Rube Goldberg Machine. This project challenges them to:

  • Combine multiple simple machines
  • Create a chain reaction that completes a simple task
  • Demonstrate teamwork, innovation, and problem-solving

We are already seeing some fantastic designs take shape, and we cannot wait to test their final creations.

Year 8

Earth in Action!

This term in Year 8 Science, students have been exploring Earth science, with a strong focus on rocks, minerals and tectonic plates. We investigated how rocks form and change over time through the rock cycle, and how tectonic plate movement shapes our planet – creating mountains, earthquakes and volcanoes.

To bring this learning to life, our Year 8 students headed to the Melbourne Museum. During the excursion, they explored exciting experiences:

  • Our Wondrous Planet – discovering Earth’s origin and how it has changed over billions of years.

  • Dynamic Earth – learning about volcanoes, earthquakes and the powerful forces beneath Earth’s surface.

  • Gondwana Garden – connecting ancient landscapes, fossils and living plants to Australia’s geological past.

Students also had the chance to closely examine real rock samples, looking at their colour, texture, layers and crystal size to identify different rock types and link them back to what they’d learned in class.

It’s been a fantastic way for students to see that Earth science isn’t just something in a textbook – it’s written in the rocks and landscapes all around us! 🌏🪨

This term, our Year 7 students have been exploring life skills through their Health and PE units. In Health, they’ve been learning about outdoor and water safety, covering topics such as how to stay safe around water, sun protection, and planning for safety outdoor adventures.

In Physical Education, students have been introduced to the exciting game of softball. They have been learning the fundamental skills such as throwing, catching, batting, and fielding, while also developing their understanding of game rules and strategies. Through drills, mini-games, and team challenges, students are not only building their physical skills, but also enhancing their teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship.

It’s been fantastic to see our Year 7s actively participating, showing great enthusiasm, and applying what they’ve learned both in the classroom and on the field.

In Health, students have been exploring the importance of good nutrition and how it supports overall wellbeing. They’ve been learning about the three main macronutrients — proteins, carbohydrates, and fats — and their specific roles in the body, as well as the essential vitamins and minerals needed for healthy growth and development. We are also going to focus on understanding and interpreting food labels, helping students build the skills to make informed food choices based on nutritional content, ingredients, and serving sizes. This unit has encouraged thoughtful discussions about healthy eating habits so far and the long-term benefits of a balanced diet.

In PE, our Year 8 students have been focusing on developing their skills and understanding of softball. They have been practising techniques such as throwing, catching, batting, and fielding, with an emphasis on accuracy, timing, and control. Students are  also learning about game tactics and team strategies, including base running, defensive positioning, and effective communication on the field. Through modified games and team-based activities, they are also strengthening their abilities to work collaboratively, make quick decisions, and demonstrate good sportsmanship.

It’s been fantastic to see the Year 8s engaging so positively with both their physical and theoretical learning this term!

Visual Art

Our Visual Arts classrooms have been buzzing with creativity this term as students across Years 7-9 explore new skills, concepts, and artistic processes.

Year 7 students have been unpacking the Elements and Principles of Art, examining how artists use these fundamentals to communicate meaning in abstract work. After conducting their own research and exploring the work of abstract artists, students have applied their understanding to create vibrant Explosion Books showcasing their personalised abstract designs.

In Year 9, students have finalised their striking Japanese Notan artworks and have now transitioned into lino printing. Working through the full Inquiry Cycle, they have reflected deeply on their own identities to inform and develop their final print designs.

Year 8 students have completed their dynamic Street Art projects, exploring how visual language can express social and cultural values. They are now collaborating on a collective artwork that aims to contribute to the beautification of our school grounds—a creative endeavour we hope will become a lasting feature of our learning environment.

Our Art team is incredibly proud of the dedication, imagination, and growth shown by all students this term.
