Year Six

Dear Year 6 Families,

Can you believe the year is almost over?! No rest for the wicked though, as we have just finished our 5th unit and are beginning our final unit for the year. This will see all new concepts for reading, writing, maths and inquiry. These last few weeks are also some of our busiest of the year with lots of exciting events still to take place.

Inquiry

Concluding: How We Organise Ourselves

Students completed their innovation projects, following the design process to plan, create, and explain a prototype that solves a real-world problem. They demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and strong communication skills as they brought their ideas to life.

New Unit: How We Express Ourselves

Our new inquiry explores art, creativity, culture, and expression. Students will analyse different forms of art, interpret artistic intent, and consider how people communicate meaning, emotion, identity, and culture through creative expression.

Early lessons include provocations about 'What is art?', 'Art vs Vandalism', and the 'evolution of art across historical eras'. Students will discuss different perspectives, examine famous artworks, explore art styles, and create their own artistic responses.

Student Reflection:

The Year Six students have been hard at work using all of their research on past innovations and inventions so they can innovate a product or appliance of their choice to solve a problem.

They went through the design process which included writing the problem statement, planning and building a prototype or model to share with their classmates and teachers.

Even though the innovations are only in their prototype form, by the end of this task, our students would have proven that their knowledge and creativity have made them true inventors.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been completing a series of pre- and post-assessments across key number, measurement and geometry concepts to identify growth and next steps in their learning. These assessments allow teachers to track progress and tailor support or extension where needed. Our next unit focuses on the concept of time, where students will learn to read, interpret and convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats. They will also practise converting between seconds, minutes and hours, solving duration problems and reading real-life schedules and timetables. These skills prepare students for practical, real-world applications and strengthen their readiness for secondary school mathematics.

Writing

In Writing, students have been strengthening their narrative and persuasive writing skills through NAPLAN-style practice sessions. They are planning their ideas carefully, using descriptive and persuasive techniques, and revising their work with attention to vocabulary, punctuation and overall clarity. As we transition into our creative expression inquiry, students will shift their focus toward exploring different forms of creative writing. They will experiment with transforming picture storybooks into poems, writing from alternative character perspectives, and generating imaginative ideas using a variety of prompts. This approach aims to build their confidence, writing stamina and creativity while preparing them for the expectations of Year 7.

Reading

In Reading, students are deepening their comprehension skills through a range of targeted strategies. They have been revisiting the QAR (Question–Answer Relationship) framework to identify different types of questions and use evidence from the text alongside their own knowledge to respond accurately. Students are reading a variety of texts, including picture books and short passages, to practise highlighting key information and creating their own questions. Moving into our next reading cycle, students will explore strategies such as visualising, inferring and responding creatively to texts through found poetry. These lessons help students develop strong analytical thinking, interpretive skills and creative responses to literature.
