Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. As students complete a book, they are to record the author, title and date of finishing in their Reader’s Workshop book. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.
Mathematics: Continue working on general multiplication skills and number facts.
Hats: Please remember that hats are a requirement for Term 4. Please ensure you child has a hat so that they are being sun safe and can play out in the sun.
Year 5 Leadership positions: Students have begun the journey of leadership applications. This is a long process that involves letter writing, interviews, speeches and voting. Please be patient as School Captain positions get allocated first, then Sports Captains, then all other positions of responsibility.
Year 6 Graduation Dinner: Year 6 students received a hard copy invitation to the graduation dinner last week and an email was sent out too. Please book via the Event Brite link for the table and via Qkr! App for your meals. Please remember to add in names and meals for each person you are booking for. A reminder that the Year 6 students are sitting altogether at tables, not with their families. However, they will need meals booked for them on Qkr!
Year 6 Graduation: We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. These photos can be emailed to Ms. Neumann (neumann.lauren@goldengrove.sa.edu.au) ASAP. Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo. Please note the Important dates:
Graduation Dinner: Wednesday 27 November 5:30 for a 6pm start
Closing Service at 9.15am - Wednesday 11 December (please note the change to the morning from previous years) Year 6 Graduation Service at 7.00 pm - Wednesday 11 December
Current and Upcoming Learning
Christian Studies: Students have begun their unit on, ‘Christians have a responsibility in and for the world’. This unit is about how we have the responsibility to be stewards (caretakers) of the world that God has created. Students have been inquiring into which groups in our world are caretakers of their issue and what they do. This week, we will be using the arts to create stop motion videos to represent and retell Bible stories that connect with their issues. Students have been asked to bring in props to begin the filming process.
Unit Of Inquiry: The students are once again back in their home classes. We have begun a science inquiry that has the central idea, ‘Science helps us to understand the world’. Student will be engaging in a variety of scientific challenges and inquiries.
Literacy: Students will be using this time to enjoy engaging with books for the love of reading. We will be taking time to think about our reading and ‘reading for understanding’. During Writer’s Workshop, we will be writing for the purpose of scientific investigations.
Mathematics: The students will be moving into algebraic thinking and exploring how they can use different concept to help solve mathematical problems. We use BEDMAS which is an acronym to remember the order of operations. (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction)
