It's Term 4! The UV is increasing. Please remember to bring your school hat!

Friday 22nd November - Whole School Dance Showcase 2:30pm in the Stadium

Hello Level 3 Families,

Welcome to Week 6 of Term 4! We are currently in the midst of Semester 2 assessments, many of which are conducted on computers. Please ensure laptops are charged each night.

In Reading, we have been doing lots of comprehension work which has involved literal comprehension (finding information directly from the text) and inferencing (finding implied answers using clues in the text). To continue supporting this at home, listen to your child read and ask a range of literal and inferential questions.

In Writing, we have been continuing our narrative writing of 'The Boy and the Elephant'. Students are typing up their stories to match the illustrations in the book. We have been focused on editing (grammar and punctuation) and up-levelling using rich vocabulary and figurative language. We can't wait to show you what they have done.

In Maths, we have been reviewing place value up to 10,000 as well as learning vertical methods to solve addition and subtraction. We have been putting emphasis on renaming numbers when subtracting. Below is an example of how we are teaching subtraction. The purpose of teaching this way is so that students understand renaming numbers and their place in the base 10 system.

In Inquiry, we've been exploring ways to keep our minds, bodies, and relationships healthy. This week and next, our dance incursion has been added to support this learning, especially around keeping our bodies active and monitoring our heart rates as we move. We're so proud of the students who have been pushing themselves in the dance sessions, particularly those trying out dance for the first time. We’re looking forward to the whole school performance on Friday, November 22nd in the afternoon!

Reading

Liam loved playing soccer, but he wasn't always the best player on his team. One day, his coach told the team that they would be having a big game against their rivals, the Eagles. Liam was nervous because he hadn't scored a goal in a while. The coach encouraged the players to practise hard and stay focused. That afternoon, Liam practised for hours, working on his footwork and aiming for the goal. When the game day arrived, Liam was ready. During the match, Liam finally scored a goal, helping his team win the game. He was so proud of himself, and his teammates cheered for him.

1. What sport does Liam love to play?

2. Who is the team’s rival?

3. What did Liam do to prepare for the big game?

4. What happened during the game?

5. Why was Liam nervous before the big game?

6. How did Liam feel after scoring the goal?

7. What does the story suggest about the importance of practice?

Writing

Think about a place you would love to visit. It could be somewhere real, like the beach or a park, or somewhere from your imagination, like a magical forest or a secret underwater world. Write a short story (5-6 sentences) about what you would do in this place. Be sure to use:

   - Descriptive words to paint a picture for the reader (e.g., colourful, sparkling, loud, quiet, warm, chilly).

   - Figurative language like similes, metaphors, or personification.

For example:

Simile: "The clouds were as fluffy as cotton candy."

Metaphor: "The sun is a golden ball in the sky."

Personification*: "The trees danced in the wind."

The more details and exciting descriptions you add, the better. Use your imagination!

VISUAL ARTS

ART SHOW EXTENSION CONNECTIONS

After the art show, some classes visited the ‘Foyer Gallery’ during art time with Ms V to look closer at other student’s work and take some inspirations. Students sketched favourite pieces or created a new piece using the other artists’ ideas.  On returning to the art room, students could choose how to complete a new piece of ‘Art Show Inspired Art’. It was very interesting to see which ideas and techniques were favourites, and this in turn will inspire planning for new artworks in 2025.

Love Art!
