Science/STEM

This term in STEM students have engaged in hands-on learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. Our latest project has involved getting our garden ready for spring planting. Supported by Surfcoast Secondary College’s Hands-On Learning students, we have been working hard to create a school garden space for everyone to enjoy. Next week students will participate in a Bunnings planting incursion. This special event will offer our students the opportunity to learn gardening skills from experts. This experience will not only enhance students' understanding of horticulture, but it will also provide an opportunity for all students to be actively involved in our school garden program.

In our science curriculum, we have been exploring the vast realms of Earth and Space Sciences. As we approach the end of this unit, we are focusing on using relevant science vocabulary to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding. Through the creation of Rube Goldberg machines, students in Grade 3-6 have been designing and building intricate contraptions that utilize a series of chain reactions. These machines not only demonstrate their understanding of the Engineering Design Process but also encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students are now in the process of compiling group presentations to showcase their machines to their peers.

Looking ahead to next term's focus, Chemical Science students will explore the properties, transformations, and interactions of matter. Students can look forward to engaging in experiments that will deepen their understanding of chemical reactions and the world around them.

The students have put in a great effort this term getting our garden ready for planting and through hands-on learning we are seeing a love for STEM and science among our students. We look forward to the upcoming Bunnings planting incursion, working in the school garden and the exciting lessons that lie ahead in Chemical Sciences next term.
