Year 8 Interschool Basketball
Upper Hume in Wodonga
16 of our top Year 8 sportspeople took part in the Upper Hume Year 8 Basketball tournament on Monday 21st August at the Wodonga Leisure Centre.
With a full 10-strong squad of girls to make up for small team of boys depleted by the loss of key players, and 5 keen Year 9 mentors/coaches/helpers, there wasn’t a spare seat on the bus such was the demand for spots on the journey.
Coach Loiterton reports the Boys worked well together and were led by Max Marek (top scorer), James Chisholm and Kayden Vozlic, also interestingly our three standout players in School Football in Term 2. The trio of smaller guards in Dylan McCombe, Jordan Jackson and Cooper Lack were said to be tenacious and hardworking across the 4 matches. The boys finished 1-4, defeating Myrtleford’s Marian College 19-17, and falling just 5 points shy of Victory Lutheran College Wodonga.
Across the stadium the Girls manage to finished 2nd in their pool, convincingly defeating Victory Lutheran College Wodonga 22-8, but falling short to the extremely strong & eventual Champion Catholic College Wodonga. Jedda Driscoll drew praise for her tenacity and end to end running and playmaking, while Milly O’Kane, this year’s Ovens & King Netball League Best & Fairest and MVP at Under 15, was able to transfer her Netball skills to the unfamiliar sport to lead the team in scoring. Isabelle Christison was a beast in defence, and Kyanna Payne chimed in with points as well.
Thank you to all 16 players, and 5 helpers, for representing the school with by all reports “sensational” behaviour and attitude, and for having a red hot go. Special thanks to staff members Damian Loiterton & Christine Watson for handling a super day out for a large group of some of our most outstanding kids, in the Sporting category and others.
