National Day of Action Against Bulling and Violence

By John Van Beek  (Year 12)

On Friday, 18 August Trinity College came together to recognise and promote the 2023 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. The Year 12 Prefects wore special blue t-shirts to promote the anti-bullying and Violence message “Say Something”. At lunchtime the Year 12 cohort ran a sausage sizzle in Carrigg Court to raise funds for Zonta House, a specialist service that provides safety, essential relief and support to women who have experienced family and domestic violence.

For further information on Zonta House, please take the time to look through their wonderful website. As a College we can minimise the effect of bullying and violence in our community.

PSA Public Speaking Competition 2023

On Wednesday, two Trinity students, Bowie McCabe (9.7) and Zach McLean (10.7) showcased their public speaking skills at the inaugural PSA Public Speaking Competition held in the Goatcher Auditorium at Wesley College.

Students were presented with a choice of four topics for each of the Junior and Senior sections ranging from ‘A favourite childhood toy’ to ‘Restoring Internet neutrality’ – with students from all the PSA schools delivering some very thoughtful and entertaining speeches on the night.

Speaking in the Junior Section (Year 8 - 9), Bowie presented a thought-provoking speech on whether the world’s best joke would be written by AI, exploring how deeply intertwined joke telling is with the nuances of our humanity – something AI would forever struggle to compete with. He spoke articulately and confidently, using expressive gestures to his advantage and we congratulate Bowie on his efforts in representing Trinity College at this inaugural competition.

Zach’s topic – The Curse of Pursuing Perfection – offered his musings on why the biggest mistake of all is not making any. The only Year 10 student in the Senior Section (Year 10 – 12), Zach spoke eloquently, with aplomb, and delivered a speech that impressed the audience so much that one of them congratulated him with the phrase ‘What a banger speech!’.

With a judging panel of three internationally renowned experts, all boasting over 20 years’ experience in teaching and adjudicating Speech and Drama, it was wonderful then, that Zach McLean was awarded 3rd Place in the Senior Section.

It is no mean feat to plan and prepare a speech (without the use of ChatGPT), then memorise and deliver it in front of a group of competitors and strangers while still maintaining your composure, and these boys showed up and absolutely delivered last night.

Well done, Bowie and Zach! You’ve made history by being the first Trinity College representatives to take part in the inaugural PSA Public Speaking Competition.

Year 7 Step-A-Thon Fundraiser

On Friday, 15 September, Year 7 students will fundraise for Br Ollie’s Wheelchairs for Kids by completing a Step-A-Thon at the WACA. Help encourage the students to complete as many steps as possible by sponsoring their efforts! Please include the name and PCG of the student you’re supporting on the Online Store billing page, under ‘order notes’, so we can see which student raised the most funds!

Acrostic Poems

Year 7 C3 English students have been looking at Acrostic poems and have produced one that represents Trinity. One student felt inspired to write about what the Year 11 Mentor program means to him. We hope you also feel inspired!
