Devote Yourself

By Michael Doolan Service Caption

The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating a better world for all who follow. I think we are creating a better world by the service we do.

Following the remarkable success of our Relay for Life, we are now focused on our next fundraiser, Vinnies Sleepout. The sleepout is held to raise money and awareness for some of the most marginalised and neglected members of our society. This year we have an astonishing 62 students tirelessly working to fundraise for people experiencing homelessness, with participants committed to raising a minimum of $50 each. We also raised money at the swimming carnival and at yesterday's walkathon for this worthy cause. The final amount will be announced in the next newsletter.

On 20 August, the SRC organised and took part in a cleanup. 31 people went to the Cairns Esplanade and picked up as many pieces of rubbish as possible. Despite the Esplanade looking clean, we collected 35 bags of rubbish! On behalf of the SRC I thank all who were involved, especially Mrs Cross and Mr Dorahy for taking time out of their weekends to help.

Finally, this is my final official service report for the newsletter, and I want to thank you all for your unwavering support. We always have willing and enthusiastic people supporting Mission initiatives. I have one last service challenge for the men of Saints – Will you be the solution or the pollution? We live by the sea and we, the people of Cairns, men of Saints can be a part of the solution to ocean pollution, or we can be the ones adding to pollution. We have a huge responsibility to look after nature so let us collectively be the solution.
