AFLQ Schools Cup

Saints Senior and Junior Teams Triumph in Mackay

In an exhilarating display of Australian Rules Football, the Saints Senior and Junior Teams emerged victorious in the AFLQ Schools Cup held in Mackay. The event showcased remarkable skill, teamwork and determination as both teams demonstrated their prowess on the field.

Saints Senior Team Dominates Chanel College, Capricornia Region

In a commanding performance, the Saints Senior Team secured a convincing victory over Chanel College, Capricornia Region, with a final score of 77-23. The key to their success lay in their exceptional play through the centre of the park, enabling them to consistently lock the ball in the forward 50 and apply relentless pressure on the opposition.

One standout player who left a mark on the game was Harry Cook. His exceptional contribution on the field earned him the prestigious title of Best on Ground for the Senior boys. Cook's strategic moves, precision passing, and ability to control the pace of the game were crucial in propelling the Saints Senior Team to their impressive win.

Saints Junior Boys Triumph over St Brendan's from Yepoon

The Junior Saints boys engaged in a nail-biting match against St Brendan's from Yeppoon, ultimately emerging victorious with a slim margin of 49-48. The game was a true testament to the spirit of competition and showcased the rising talent within the AFLQ Schools Cup.

Xavier Lallemand shone brightly in the Junior match, displaying a remarkable combination of agility, and sheer determination. His outstanding performance earned him the title of Best on Ground for the Junior category. Lallemand's contributions played a pivotal role in securing the win for the Junior Saints boys.

The AFLQ Schools Cup in Mackay was a resounding success, with the Saints Senior and Junior Teams delivering exceptional performances on the field. Their victories highlighted the importance of teamwork, skill development and strategic gameplay in Australian Rules Football. The boys are now hard at work as they begin the next phase of the AFLQ Schools competition with the state finals to be held in Maroochydore on the 13-15 October.

Year 8 Rugby League

The Year 8 Rugby League Super 4s competition has continued throughout Term 3. Week 6 saw Saints take on Bentley Park in an away fixture. The boys started the game strongly and took a lead heading into halftime. Unfortunately, some key errors and ill-discipline cost our boys in the second half and gave Bentley Park an opportunity to fight back. Goal kicking was the difference in the end with Bentley taking a 2-point win in a 4 tries all encounter.

The boys were hungry to bounce back in their next contest against Mareeba State High School. They managed to demolish Mareeba in a 46-4 comprehensive victory to finish the regular season ahead of the semi-finals. The Week 8 semis saw us looking to avenge our loss during the regular season. The boys executed Mr Anderson’s game plan much more effectively in this round and forced an arm wrestle with a determined Bentley team. Great teamwork and some inspiring individual efforts inspired a 16-14 victory to set up a grand final against Trinity Bay next Wednesday at 4pm at Stan Williams Park, Brothers Rugby League. Well done to Mr Anderson, Mr Will and the team for your efforts so far this season and good luck in the final.

Rugby League 9s

Saints participated in the Years 7-10 annual Rugby League 9s competitions during August at Stan Williams Park. Saints entered teams in all the divisions, looking to give our boys an opportunity to play more footy and look at some new combinations ahead of the 2024 season. The Saints Year 7 team fought hard throughout their games, finishing with one fit player on the bench in their final game against Trinity Bay. The boys went down by 1 try but put in a great effort to finish runners-up on the day. Saints Years 8 and 9 teams both had very successful days under the coaching of Mr Rob Anderson emerging undefeated and winning their grand finals to be crowned the 9s' champion teams in their respective divisions. The Year 10 team showed a lot of promise in their carnival with some standout performances from senior players Rhys Woolcott and Cooper Meares catching the eye of their coach, Mr Will. Unfortunately, the boys lost their final game against Gordonvale High by 1 point and missed out on a place in the grand final by 1 point. Congratulations to all who participated throughout the carnival.

Rugby Union

Northern Rugby 7s Challenge

A dominant demolition in itself, the St Augustine’s Rugby Union boys found themselves very successful across many age groups at the Northern Rugby 7’s Challenge. With the trustworthy guidance of Mr Anton Williams and Mr Toby McCarthy, the 13’s, 15’s and Senior Rugby 7s teams embarked on an 8am departure from St Augustine’s on Friday, 25 August.

For the Under 13s category the match results were as follows:

Won vs Peace 35-10

Won vs STACC 40-10

Won vs Redlynch 25-5

Won Semi vs Cairns High 15-10

Won final vs Peace 20-15

The Under 13 boys played exceptionally well, showing high promise for their future of Rugby Union at St Augustine’s. During their pool games the Under 13s showed pure dominance with a for-and-against of +75. Topping their pool, the under 13s found themselves against a strong Cairns High team, however, the boys pulled through a win leading 15-10, putting them in the Grand Final. After a strong tussle against the Under 13s Peace team, the Saints boys came out on top finishing the carnival undefeated.

For the Under 15s category the match results were as follows:

Won vs Good Counsel 26-19

Won vs Redlynch 24-5

Won Semi vs Cairns High 22-10

Won final vs Good Counsel    26-7

Unfortunately, in the Under 15s category there were fewer teams in the competition. However, after winning their pool games against Good Counsel and Redlynch, the Under 15s found themselves entering a semi-final against Cairns High. Despite Cairns High’s immaculate effort, the Saints boys escaped with a promising effort, sending them into the grand final. Competing against the already familiar Good Counsel team, the Under 15s topped their performance from Round 1, taking a comfortable win with a score line of 26-7. Overall, the Under 15s played extraordinarily, completing the carnival undefeated.

In the senior category, the match results were as follows:

Won vs CSHS 25-12

Won vs BPC 45-10

Won vs Redlynch 39-5

Won Final vs CSHS 43-10

Despite a slow start to the carnival, the Senior Rugby 7’s boys finished the competition undefeated. Winning our first pool game against CSHS (25-12), we were confident and determined to put more points on the board. The Seniors continued their march with dominant performances against Bentley Park College and Redlynch State High School, finishing their pool games with a for-and-against of +82. Heading straight into the Grand Final, our opponent was a familiar Cairns High team and we were quick off the mark leading at half time 31-0. Ball in hand, we found our rhythm finishing the Grand Final with a convincing score line of 43-10.

Well done to all of the boys who played in the carnival and a very special mention to Mr Williams and Mr McCarthy who coached the teams throughout the day. Also, a massive thanks to Mr Ellison and Mr Egan for coming along and helping out during the carnival.

Saints First XV vs St Peters, Yorkshire (UK Touring Team)

On 11 August, the St Augustine’s First XV team played against a strong and well-trained St Peter’s from Yorkshire, UK. St Peter’s showed dominance throughout the entire game, and despite a strong effort from the First XV Saints boys, the Yorkshire boys were able to take a nice win back home.

Opening their bank, the Yorkshire boys stole a quick try in the opening of the first half. Although the Saints boys held possession for majority of the first half, St Peter’s stayed calm, structured, and were able to wiggle their way through. St Peter’s lead 2 tries to nil in the first half, whilst the Saints boys were desperate to open their score line. After a long wrestle, St Peter's won the match 4 tries to nil. Special mention to Jack Rix for his overall performance in that match, as well as Lachlan Magill, who set a great example defensively and with the ball in hand.

A massive shoutout to the boys who played in that match, and a big thanks to supporting staff, Mr McCarthy and Mr Williams, who encouraged us and coached us throughout the entire match.

JSS

Saints JSS teams have continued their strong start to the season with strong rounds against Peace Lutheran College, Cairns State High School and St Andrew’s College. Saints AFL, basketball, football (2 draws) and touch have maintained their unbeaten records to date this season, with our volleyball team only conceding one loss with one draw. Our teams are definitely warming into the competition and have improved as the season has progressed. The squads will be looking to continue their winning ways and look to consolidate their places on the ladder heading towards the end of Term 3.
