Year 12s - you are almost there!
For our General students, you have only two weeks of Class in which to complete your final assessments. Your sign-off sheets will be available next week, and these will be signed by your teachers once all work for the course is completed. I know many of you have been working hard to ensure you finish the final weeks of your schooling on a positive note and your efforts have not gone unnoticed.
ATAR students - your course work it almost done and exams are on the horizon. Reach out for support if you need it for the final push to the end. You will have an opportunity to reset over the holidays and then return for final revision before your WACE exams. It's a big effort and we are all proud of you.
The Year 11 General PPS classes have been conducting their fertiliser trial this term which looked at varying fertiliser rates and the response of wheat growth. Both classes planted six plots with four different rates of MAP/MOP fertiliser applied, this being no fertiliser, 40kg/ha, 70kg/ha and 100kg/ha. Each week the students complete crop observations and measurements which are recorded in a excel spreadsheet which compares the data over a 14-week growth period. All the students have taken great pride in their trials keeping them maintained so they are in a tidy condition to be displayed at Open Day this week.
The Year 11 APS students started their chicken feed trial this term which tied in nicely with their current Nutrition and Digestion unit. The investigative trial is looking at the response of chicken growth to three different protein feed rations. 30-day old chickens were randomly placed into three groups, one being the control group that is fed Milne chick starter crumble which has 18% protein and for the two other groups the students have created rations at 20% and 22% protein using a Milne chick starter crumble and meat meal combination. The students do daily checks on the chickens, making sure their feed and water is topped up and that the shed temperature is at the right warmth. The students have done a fantastic job taking on the responsibility of caring for and raising the chickens, so they are ready to be sold on Open Day this week. All the proceeds from the chicken sale will be donated to a charity of the student’s choice.
The chickens that have been reared in the year 11 APS feed trial will be for sale on Open Day. They are priced at $15 each and every buyer must purchase a minimum of 2 chickens. There are 28 six-week-old chickens for sale. We have started taking pre-orders, so if you would like to reserve any chickens please email either Macey or Kateland on: macey.hill@education.wa.edu.au or Kateland.jury@education.wa.edu.au. On Open Day you will need to purchase your chickens at the front desk at admin and then bring your receipt to classroom 2 with your pet carrier to collect your chickens. All proceeds from the sale of the chickens will be donated to a charity of the student’s choice.
