UniMelb | e-Meet a Biomedical Scientist 2023
August 14 to August 18, 2023
We want to celebrate National Science Week by connecting our University of Melbourne Biomedical Scientists with Victorian high school students. The opportunity to talk to our Biomedical Researchers is one of a kind, given they work at the centre of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest biomedical precinct!
During 20 to 30 minute video calls, our experts – many of whom are global leaders in their research field – will help you to inspire the next generation of Biomedical Scientists.
Students in Years 9–12 from across metropolitan, regional and rural schools are invited to ask questions about:
- What it’s like to make a major scientific discovery?
- How it feels to change the course of a person’s health – and life?
- What career pathways are available for budding young Biomedical Scientists?
- What are the latest technologies available in modern-day, cutting-edge science laboratories?
- And much more.
The School of Biomedical Sciences will work with you to “match-make” our Biomedical experts with participating school classes in the week prior to National Science Week so that meetings can ideally take place during National Science week itself – Monday 14 – Friday 18 August.
Yakult Science & Lab Skills Workshop
August 14 to August 18, 2023
Yakult is committed to improving and providing a link between education and the food industry.
This unique Lab Skills Workshop is ideal for your budding scientist. Attendees will be guided as they carry out simulated scientific testing used to ensure Yakult’s high quality drink.
Each session runs for approximately 90mins. This includes a free factory tour of the Yakult facilities and the opportunity to taste refreshing Yakult.
Located at 10 Monterey Road, Dandenong Victoria. Visitors can view the entire production process safely through large viewing windows. The hi-tech facility incorporates food processing equipment designed specifically for manufacturing Yakult, including Yakult’s distinctively-shaped bottles, filling and packaging lines, culture and quality control rooms.
SciFest 2023
August 14 to August 18, 2023
SciFest 2023 is the biggest virtual excursions festival in Australia promoting science and technology. SciFest links up with National Science week and is on between 14 – 18 August. This year we have 15 events from some of Australia’s best education providers.
The theme for National Science Week in 2023 is Innovation: Powering Future Industries. The theme incorporates the advancement in technology in all industries, especially using artificial intelligence (AI).
Victorian Careers & Employment Expo 2023
August 17 to August 19, 2023
Victoria’s New Careers & Employment Event is open from August 17 to 19, 2023 at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. The Expo will showcase over 100 organisations and employers with career opportunities for all ages. Entry is free.
The event is for school students, parents, teachers, graduates, job seekers, people looking for courses and workers seeking new training options.
Exploring Careers in STEM

Interested in a career in STEM? Come along to Melton City Libraries to hear from a diverse panel of young people who work in the field. Ingrid, Daniel and Josh will speak about their journeys so far working in the industry, and answer any questions you may have.

- Ingrid Freeman (data science student at Melbourne University and data science associate at PWC Australia);
- Daniel Masini (STEM Squad Lead at Western BACE, graphic designer and media design at Acusensus, TwistED science presenter, IT major and space science student at RMIT University); and
- Josh Quinal (STEM Squad Lead at Western BACE, web designer/developer at Caring Zone, and engineering (mechatronics) student at RMIT University).

National Science Quiz 2023

The National Science Quiz is a fast-paced and fun live quiz show held in Melbourne for National Science Week. In the audience and around the country, thousands join in to play along with the quiz and compete for cash prizes, trophies and the honour of calling themselves National Science Quiz Champions!
Join host Charlie Pickering and special guest team captains Nate Byrne – ABC News Breakfast (ABC TV) and Simon Pampena – Catalyst (ABC TV) / Outrageous Acts of Science (Discovery Channel) for a celebration of science. Watch as our two teams battle it out to be this year’s National Science Quiz 2023 champions. The winning team will leave victorious and the losing team will be slimed live-on-stage!

AIE | Industry Experience Days
September 20 to October 4, 2023
AIE’s Industry Experience Day is a great opportunity for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to learn about the local and international game development, 3D animation and visual effects industries. Students will get the opportunity to learn about the different pathways to get into the industry, what should be in a portfolio and will be able to get creative in practical workshops using industry-standard 3D animation and game development tools.
The sessions are run by industry professionals who have worked on some blockbuster games and films. Everything is provided for you to participate in the hands-on workshops and you will be using the same software that is used in the industry.

University of Melbourne | Hands on Engineering & IT
September 27 to September 28, 2023
A day of workshops to introduce year 10 students to different areas of Engineering & IT.
You don’t need any prior knowledge – this day is about having a look at Engineering & IT, solving a few problems, seeing the campus, meeting some students and academics, having a pizza lunch and having fun. The schedule will be repeated daily so students should attend one day only.
