There has been a lot of wondering, questioning and problem solving happening

 in the STEAM room this term.

Foundation

Our Foundation students have just concluded their 5-week coding unit using Scratch Junior. Students created a range of interactive stories where they considered characters, settings and actions. They have now commenced learning about how sound travels.

Grade 1 and 2

Students have been learning about Artificial Intelligence through the 'Day of AI' program. Through this 4-week unit, students considered the importance of key words when researching, learnt what data and algorithms are and considered how data is collected and used in Digital technologies.  Students have now commenced a sound unit, learning how sound travels. Students have been making a range of instruments to support their understanding.

 

Grade 3 and 4

Students are learning about the iconic buildings of Melbourne, considering what makes them iconic and engineering their own models of these buildings. Students have also had a glimpse into the Metro tunnels and the new Town Hall station. Through the Mini Melbourne extension of Minecraft Education, Students were given the tasks of consider accessibility, sustainability, timetabling and originality to design elements for this new station.

Grade 5

Grade 5 students extended their understanding of circuitry to create Scribblebot robots. This unit proved to be both fun and educational providing students with an opportunity to create with motors, switches, wires and creating our own colour wheels. Students have now commenced learning about 3D design. They are designing a toy for a child if they went to space as part of the Commissioners challenge using Makers Empire. Throughout the engage stage of this task students heard from past astronauts about their explorations and have applied this insight to their designs.

Grade 6

Students have engaged with the 'Day of AI' program, creating a solution for a UN Sustainable goal using AI.  The ideas have been many and varied and have displayed our student's creativity. Please enjoy some of the examples below.

HEPS Science Photography

As part of National Science Week at HEPS, students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 competed in a science photography competition.  Students looked for patterns and naturally forming wonders. Well done to all the students who entered.
