Level 5

Excursion to Bayswater Secondary College

On Friday, August 29th, Level 5 travelled by foot to Baywater Secondary College. Students engaged in collaborative activities and had a 'taste' of what secondary school will be like.

Literacy

Level 5 has begun to dig deeper, explore, evaluate, and create Poetry.

They have been encouraged to understand and analyse vocabulary in various poems.

Students read an 'Ode to Dad' in preparation for Father's Day. Teachers supported students to capture the heart of the poem by using the 8 to 1 thinking routine.

Can you write eight words that capture the heart of what you connect with about the poem? Can you then eliminate four and keep the four most important, then keep only two, and then only one? What was the one word that captures the heart of the poem... 'Ode to Dad' Ask your children what their own one word was.

Teachers continue to support students to further develop their critical thinking skills by using Thinking Moves. They discussed Iconic Dads on TV, such as Homer Simpson, Daddy Pig (from Peppa Pig), Bandit (From Bluey), Mr Incredible, Gru (from Minions), and Mufasa (from The Lion King). Students were guided to capture the essence of each iconic Dad and describe each one using just one word. Each class then had a large bank of adjectives that they could use in their own Ode to their own Dad/Father figure for Father's Day.

Father's Day morning

Thank you to our Dads who visited our classrooms on Monday to celebrate Father's Day at HEPS. After a wonderful breakfast and assembly, some of our Level 5 Dads worked with our Maths Olympiad team on some challenging problem-solving tasks.  Can you think like a Maths Olympiad participant and solve this equation with your Level 5 student?

Inquiry

It's all about animal adaptations in our Inquiry unit titled 'Change'. Level 5 and 6 students have combined, and the entire BER is working together.

Students were able to have a choice in the biome that they study and are working collaboratively with a partner on an Inquiry project.

Biomes include Marine, Tundra, Grasslands, Forests, Deserts, Fresh Water and Wetlands.

Questions included

  • What do you notice about this environment?
  • What would make it hard to survive here?
  • What makes the desert difficult for this animal?
  • What adaptation helps it survive?

Thinking Routine: Imagine If….

Students were asked to imagine if they were an animal trying to survive in their biome. What would you need? And why? Through collaboration and respectfully challenging their peers, students discussed Imagine If.....
