From Nick, Senior School Science teacher
We have been very busy in the science rooms exploring all things about physics.
Grade 3
We have been learning about potential and kinetic energy using the PhET Skatepark simulation. They experimented with ramps, loops and jumps to see how stored energy changes into movement. There were plenty of exciting discoveries as they found out how height, speed and gravity work together.
Grade 4
We have been investigating how different objects transfer heat. Using metal, plastic and fabric, students observed how quickly heat can move through different materials. This led to designing their own “esky” to keep an ice cube in a solid state for as long as possible!
Grade 5
We have been shining light through a variety of materials to explore transparent, translucent and opaque objects. From glass windows to frosted paper and solid wood, they discovered how materials can let light through, scatter it, or block it completely.
Grade 6
We have been working with batteries, wires and bulbs to explore electrical circuits and Ohm’s Law. They tested how voltage, current and resistance are connected, and experimented with ways to make bulbs shine brighter or dimmer. Ready to start our term project!
Science Fun Fact
Did you know that a new baby giraffe has been born at Melbourne Zoo? This is the first baby giraffe born at the zoo in 20 years. When the calf was born it weighed a whopping 75kg, now that’s a big baby!! Here is a photo of the new arrival with the proud Mum.
