Gude NMPS!
As some of you may have already heard, I was off adventuring for the first two weeks of Term 3. I spent my time in Papua New Guinea, trekking from South to North across the Owen Stanley Range on the Kokoda Track.
Along the way, we passed through and camped in many local mountain villages. At times we certainly didn’t share dialects with the locals, but there was one thing we always managed to share - the international language of sport!
Every spare inch of room in my pack was stuffed full of deflated PE Department donation footballs. As the pump came out at each village, it didn’t take the locals long to figure out what was going on and come on over for a kick. In a part of the world best described as Rugby obsessed, we somehow managed to teach a local or two that strange AFL skill, the handball.
Creating memories that will last a lifetime (and hopefully creating a few future AFL superstars) it was easy to see that sport really is the great world wide communicator. We didn’t need gyms or active wear, we didn’t even need shoes. Just a ball, some grass and something that is inside all humans - a shared love of movement.
