From the Year 2 Classroom

Week 5 already!!! It's hard to believe we only have 4 weeks left until the next school holidays.  It has been a great 5 weeks though and more fun to continue of the next coming weeks.

The children have been fantastic with wearing their hats again, plus it is such a great feeling knowing that we are wearing them because the weather is warming up!!

The learning from this week and the week ahead are as follows:-

In Literacy the children have been learning about finding the Main idea in a text, looking for the hidden clues such as headings, pictures, repeated words and the first and last sentence.  It is important to know what the main idea of a text is to help comprehend and understand what we are learning about.  Next week the reading skill will be summarising, noting the important part of the story, including characters, settings, problems and solutions.

The children have loved publishing their own crayon stories! They did the most amazing job at putting themselves into the shoes of a lost crayon and writing a letter for someone to come and rescue them.  We have collated each classes books for the children to share their writing and be proud of their work.  Next week we will be focussing on persuasive writing and dabble in some poetry.

We finished up Multiplication and division for the time being last week.  I'm sure the children will be thankful to not have to work out another array for a while.  This week and next week we are moving to measurement and geometry, focusing on shape.  The children will learn about shape attributes, rearrange and manipulate shapes and sort regular and irregular polygons.

We are hoping that you would have heard about Andrew McDonald, the amazing author of 'The Real Pigeons' and 'Twigs' coming to visit the school. The children participated in a workshop with him and absolutely loved it.  Andrew had the children completely engaged with his stories, pictures and details of being an author and how to create your ideas with your own imagination.  Since then the children have loved reading his books in class that the school purchased to share around.

In inquiry we are continuing to read the book 'My Place', where we are learning about how History has changed over time.  We are learning about each decade and how a tiny township turned into a big village.  The characters intertwine and the children are loving to figure out how the puzzle pieces fit together.

In Religion we are beginning the new topic 'Let's Care for Creation'.  In this unit we will focus on caring for our environment around us.  What we can do to help our community and world we live in.  To end our last unit of Jesus' Stories- the children put together their own puppet show of a story of their choice.  They were able to video this and share it with the class.

Please remember to book in a Learning conversation with your child's teacher if you have not done so yet.  These are taking place next Tuesday and Wednesday.
