Our last unit for the year is 'The birth of Jesus: The Messiah.' Today it appears that the message of Christmas is often lost in the commercialism that surrounds Christmas. Students’ thoughts are occupied with presents and holidays. However for many Catholics this is one of the few times of the year that they attend Mass. All know that it is a special day because it is the day of Christ’s birth, however few know of the importance of Christ’s birth. This unit tries to show students the importance of the birth of Jesus for Christians.

Literacy

Throughout the term we have studied our class novel, 'Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow,' written by Jesscia Townsend.

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Born on Eventide, she's blamed for every misfortune in her town and doomed to die on her eleventh birthday. But when the clock strikes midnight, a mysterious man named Jupiter North whisks her away to the secret city of Nevermoor—a place where magic thrives and Morrigan might just belong.

To stay, she must compete in four dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each with extraordinary talents. The prize? A place in the prestigious Wundrous Society. The catch? Morrigan doesn’t know what her knack is—or if she even has one.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend is a whimsical, thrilling adventure full of wonder, danger, and heart. Perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland, it’s the beginning of a spellbinding series that celebrates courage, friendship, and finding your place in the world.

To conclude our term, students were given the opportunity to vote on a free-choice novel. After thoughtful discussion and a class-wide vote, we’re excited to begin reading Then by Morris Gleitzman in Week Six.

Then is the compelling sequel to Once, which we explored earlier this year. It continues the story of Felix and Zelda, two children navigating the unimaginable challenges of life in Nazi-occupied Poland during the Holocaust. Felix, a Jewish boy, and Zelda, the daughter of Nazi parents who has rejected their beliefs, escape from a deathcamp bound train and embark on a perilous journey through a war-torn landscape.

Their story is one of courage, resilience and deep friendship. With the help of Genia, a brave Polish farmer who risks her life to protect them, Felix and Zelda discover both the cruelty and kindness that exist in times of conflict. Gleitzman’s writing offers a powerful blend of heartbreak and hope, making Then a moving and thought-provoking read for young people.

We look forward to engaging with this novel as a class and exploring its themes through discussion, reflection and creative activities.

Maths: During maths sessions throughout the term we will be looking at:

🔍 Data Investigation: Students are learning how to collect, organize and interpret data using tables, graphs and charts. They're exploring how data helps us make informed decisions and spot patterns in the world around us.

➗ Fractions, Decimals & Percentages: We're strengthening understanding of how these concepts connect and how to convert between them. Students are applying these skills to real-life contexts like money, measurement, and comparisons.

➕ The Four Operations: Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are being revisited with a focus on problem-solving and strategy. Students are learning to choose the most efficient method and explain their reasoning clearly.

We begin our maths sessions with Daily 10. This is a chance to revisit mental computation.

Daily 10 - Mental Maths Challenge - Topmarks

Inquiry: Our Inquiry unit is a science unit, looking at all the different features of space. We are currently working on producing an information piece on different planets within our solar system.

We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit Inland Rail and watch the enormous cranes in action. We also got to congratulate Paige Enright on winning the crane naming competition.

Year 6 Movie:

As part of our Year 6 graduation celebrations, each student will be creating a personal iMovie to share. This short 30-second video will highlight key moments from their life journey so far and will be created during school time.

To prepare, each student will need approximately 20 photos that represent significant stages of their life — from early childhood through to the present. They will also choose a meaningful song to accompany their video.

The easiest way to provide these photos is via a USB stick. However, if this isn’t convenient, you’re welcome to email the photos to us, and we’ll ensure they’re downloaded and ready for your child to use.

We aim to have all materials ready and the videos completed by the end of Week 9.

Thank you for your ongoing support we’re looking forward to celebrating this special milestone with you!
