Kitchen Garden

On Tuesday 5th August, our garden adventures began with composting, planting and brainstorming all things mushrooms with our Year 1/2 students. This term, using a mushroom kit, we will grow our own mushrooms, exploring the wonderful world of fungi! During our discussion, questions were raised such as… ‘Where do mushrooms come from?’ ‘What do you know about mushrooms?’ ‘Have you tried mushrooms before?’ ‘What did they taste like?’ and ‘How do they grow?’ The curiosity of our students sparked lots of ideas and an overall eagerness to begin our mushroom project. We will commence on Monday, giving us exactly 12-14 days before we can harvest our mushrooms!
The next garden task on our agenda was to check on our compost bins that had been ‘sleeping’ for a few weeks. This is always like opening a treasure chest because we never know what we will discover inside!
After also discussing what our garden needs to flourish, we put on our garden gloves and began weeding, cleaning, collecting fallen gum leaves, sweeping around the decking, topping up the garden beds with sugar mulch, cleaning out some of our pots and replanting seeds of zinnias, marigolds and camomile. This was all in preparation for our spring awakening of the plants and to add lots of colour in order to encourage our bees to return to the garden and help pollinate our spring/summer vegetables that we will plant.
These sessions were a fantastic opportunity for students to explore science and sustainability, and we look forward to the next stage of this project.
