Principal News

Dear Marian Catholic College Community,

On Tuesday we received a surprise visit from a former student of Marian (during its Catholic High School Days), the Hon Mrs Nichole Overall Member of Legislative Council  (NSW Parliament).

Nichole graduated from Catholic High School in 1989 as Marcellin House Captain, being known back in the day as Nichole Smith. She was accompanied by Mr Dugald Saunders (MP), Member for Dubbo, Shadow Minister for Regional NSW, Agriculture, Trade and Natural Resources and Leader of Nationals (NSW) and Emma, a youth parliament representative, also from Griffith but not from Marian.

Nichole Overall and Dugald Saunders were able to have a brief tour of the school and address our Year 11 students, talking about their leadership journey and the different qualities that go into becoming a leader, whether that be a badged student leader, a senior student, a community, business or political leader of the future. As Year 11 begin their transition into the HSC in Term 4 and apply for formal leadership roles in the school, we hope they remember some of the takeaways from our visitors at the Leadership Assembly on Tuesday. These included advice to:

  • Take up every opportunity offered to make a positive contribution to the communities you belong to  and to learn as a leader;
  • Not be worried about putting yourself forward for a role you are interested;
  • Understand that the community needs leaders in all areas and at all times and also that people become leaders at different times in their lives;
  • Leadership is not one size fits all. People find their own ways and styles of leadership that are authentic to their own skills and personality.
  • All Year 12 students at Marian are leaders and role models for the younger students in the College.

We look forward to our student leadership process and applications which will occur in the next two weeks under the leadership of Mrs Segrave and Ms Reynolds.

This Friday August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. This is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Catholic Church. Sacred Heart Parish Griffith invites all to attend this special mass on Friday at 5.30pm which will be followed by a candlelit procession and a light supper at the Parish Hall.
