In keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Book an Adventure’, there was lots of adventures to be had in the library for Book Week last week. This year the Children’s Book Council of Australia celebrated 80 years of Book Week. To quote their website: “That’s 80 years of inspiring young minds to journey through the countless worlds that books offer.” What an amazing legacy for generations of Australian readers.
We had a fantastic week of events and activities; here’s a snapshot of our Book Week adventures…
This regular event was extra special as the students were encouraged to share, not just about the books they were currently reading, but also about the books that changed their lives. Books like ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio, the Asylum series by Madeleine Roux and books about World War I were part of the discussion. They described these books as opening their eyes to different aspects of the world around them including events in world history and to a specific genre and way of storytelling. It was a fantastic time of discussion.
Award-winning author of the “Talismans of Fate” series Melanie La’Brooy shared her writing workshop with our Year 7 EP and VHAP students on Thursday 21 August. The students were really engaged as she shared her 5 areas to kick-start writing a story. Melanie did a cut-down version of her workshop with students at lunchtime too. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and I want to thank her for sharing her time and her talents with us.
We have a winner! Yarra House with 194 points has once again won this year’s Reading Challenge and will be the recipients of The Readers Cup and celebratory Pizza Lunch. Congratulations Yarra, you have been outstanding. Second place was awarded to Kalinda with 138 points. Third and fourth place were awarded to Mullum (94 points) and Maroondah (58) respectively.
Our individual winners and honourable mentions have also been extraordinary and will receive an invitation to the Pizza Lunch in a couple of weeks’ time. There were 144 students who participated in this year’s challenge and collectively they read 486 books between May - August. Special mention and thanks also goes to the English teachers who brought their classes to the library for borrowing and encouraged them to log their reading. An amazing effort everyone.
