Learning and Teaching

LS1 Juniors
The Juniors in LS1 have been very busy writing Procedures and conducting experiments all related to our fascinating Term 3 topic of ‘Transformation’.
Some of the experiments the Juniors have done include mixing bi-carb soda and vinegar to create a fizzy concoction. The Juniors had to carefully list the materials they needed and record the steps that took place.
Special attention was given to including time connectives like first, then, after that and verbs like pour, mix and place. Another interesting experiment the students were able to do was the Rainbow experiment where students mixed different coloured dye with milk and then added dishwashing liquid. Student loved seeing the interesting results that took place.
However, probably the most interesting experiment was the ‘Bread in a Bag’experiment where students all partook in small groups in making dough, kneading it and cooking it in the oven. For many students, this was the first time they had ever cooked with yeast and learning about how it helps bread to rise was very interesting. Connections were later made to the sharing of bread at Eucharist and the transformation of the bread into the body of Jesus.
Witnessing the dough transform into real bread was indeed a fascinating experience for all and one the Juniors will remember and connect to for a long time. It must also be mentioned, they loved eating it in the end!

Procedure Writing in LS3
This term, our students have been diving into the world of procedure writing – learning how to clearly explain the steps needed to complete a task. What better way to make learning fun than by combining it with a hands-on activity?
To bring the concept to life, students followed a step-by-step procedure to make slime! With their instructions in hand, they measured, mixed, stirred, and stretched their way through the process, learning the importance of clear, ordered steps along the way.
This engaging activity not only taught students how to write effective procedures but also helped develop their comprehension, sequencing, and critical thinking skills.
It was a messy, memorable, and meaningful learning experience.
State of Matter in LS3
This week in our learning space, we’ve been exploring solids, liquids, and gases
To help us really understand how particles behave in different states, we kicked things off with an interactive role play. Students became particles themselves, moving and acting like solids (closely packed and still), liquids (flowing and sliding past each other), and gases (spreading out and bouncing freely). It was amazing to see science come to life.
Following the role play, students applied their new understanding in a hands-on creative
activity.
Using materials like cotton balls, sequins, pom-poms, and other craft supplies, they represented how particles are arranged in each state of matter.
CELEBRATING BOOK WEEK 2025 AT SFS
‘BOOK AN ADVENTURE’
At SFS, we love celebrating book week and this year was no different. Our costume parade in the hall was a huge hit and the effort that went into costumes was evident, with everything from picture book favourites, modern novels and movie tie-ins all represented. Teachers also joined in, which added to the fun and school-wide participation. The parade was a strong reminder of the way books and storytelling can bring our community together, and it was fantastic to see students, staff and families supporting the event. On the day, children also participated in a range of different activities which were linked to this year’s theme, ‘Book an Adventure’. Through the telling of stories, we can experience big adventures that stretch our imagination and understanding.
A huge thank you to all families for helping their children organise their costumes and to our teachers too, who go above and beyond each year to make this day a wonderful one for all students. Your efforts and support of this day are appreciated. We would also like to thank the Parents and Friends for organising a special ‘toastie’ lunch for students, along with a bookmark, to add to the fun and excitement of the day.
As Book Week comes and goes for another year, it is also a good time to reflect on the importance of reading for enjoyment at home and at school. Reading has great benefits for children both academically and socially. As parents and carers, sharing stories that you enjoyed as a child or can enjoy together creates a shared experience that children may remember for a lifetime.
Remember, you can read anywhere and at any time! There are so many places you can visit to find a book to enjoy. We have a fantastic collection of books at our school and some wonderful local libraries too.
So, pick up a book and let the adventure begin!
Happy Reading!

TERM 4 SWIMMING
Thank you to all the parents who have completed the swimming Operoo form. If parents who have not completed it, could please do so as soon as possible as I will need to provide Casey Race with final numbers.
A swimming ability form will be sent home for all prep students and any new students enrolled this year. Casey Race has records for the students that attended last year. If you receive an ability form please complete this form and return to your child’s home group teacher as soon as possible. These will be passed onto the pool so that students can be placed into their initial groups. Students will be further assessed in their first swimming lesson.
Parents who have volunteered to assist the juniors, I will be checking that your Working with Children Check is current and registered with the school office. I will then be in contact with you prior to swimming beginning.
Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home. Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Race to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents I have contacted will be able to assist in the junior change rooms.
A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend, you will need to provide a medical certificate for your child to be exempt. They will then remain at school in another Learning Space.
