From The Team
The 5/6 cohort have had an exciting week of learning, and been very busy adjusting to the new literacy structure. Reading fluency has been the focus over the past few weeks, with students practising their accuracy, phrasing and expression. If you can, try and make some time for the pleasurable activity of reading with your child; ask them to read out loud, and talk about their new skills in reading fluency.
With Book Week this week, our students had the opportunity to view some of the new exciting texts and toys available at the Book Fair, and organise their Book Week costumes. It’s been inspiring to see how excited and motivated our cohort are to embrace the Book Week celebrations.
Finally, students have been highly anticipating Hoop Time this term. They have been very excited and motivated to practise before the big day, including their participation in the South East Melbourne Phoenix basketball clinic on Monday. We hope all Hoop Time teams had a wonderful time today and, fingers-crossed, some teams progress to the next round!

New Displays
Our BER Collaborative Space has some new displays of our learning. The 5/6 students have been working hard to publish their awesome poetry, and we have displayed them all on our wall. It looks amazing! The students got very creative with these and, not only showed how they’ve mastered poetry, but also put in effort into presenting their poems in an appealing way.
With the study of our new text, Tim Winton’s Blueback, we have created a very cool display to replicate the book cover. Students coloured in a groper fish to imitate Blueback and wrote a word that Tim uses to describe the remarkable fish.

The Escaping Frog
A frog has fallen into a pit that is 30 metres deep. Each day the frog climbs up 3 metres but falls back 2 metres at night.
How many days does it take for the frog to escape?
Victorian State Schools' Spectacular Rehearsal
On the 15th of August, 14 senior students and 2 Year 4s went to the Victorian State Schools' Spectacular practice. We were introduced to a caterpillar line, where we stood in line partners and walked like we were on a mission to get into our spots. There were so many other schools there who performed the same dance items as us! After we got the costumes, we started to do the dances. We had 8 dances and practised each of them. We danced to our first dance Levels with our shiny gold wings jacket. We wore the same for Move Your Feet but with the jacket tied up double knotted around our waist. We also got a surprise dance where we were able to freestyle the whole time. We also learnt the canons of 99 Red Balloons. Thank you to the parent helpers for driving us to the rehearsal. Thank you for reading !!

South East Melbourne Phoenix Basketball Clinic
On Monday the 18th of August, two people from the South East Melbourne Phoenix Basketball Club came to run a clinic at our school for all the year levels. Adrian and Michaela came out with basketballs to help us get prepared for Hoop Time. First we played some games to warm up. We played a game of Red Light Green Light but instead of just running we dribbled basketballs and it was really fun. We did dribbling relays in groups of three; in one race we had to dance. Then we got taught how to shoot with a fun acronym for a shooting routine, BEEF: Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow-through. Then we did a contest between the 3 grades to see who was better at shooting. At the end we played Numbers, and got a Game Time jersey with a voucher for a basketball camp.

Poems
This term, the 5/6s have been learning, writing and exploring poems. We started off by learning about limericks. We started by critiquing and listening to limericks read by our teachers. After that, we began to brainstorm ideas in our Writer’s Notebooks. We then analysed our plans and transferred it into a poem. We then overlooked all of our poems and chose our favourite one to publish. We used that same process to make our odes and free verse poems. Our teacher then took our best published poem and put it on one of the walls of the BER. We all had at least ONE poem on the wall, but some of us had more than one. Now, when we walk past that wall, you see all of these outstanding published poems!

Book Week
Our annual Book Week Dress-Up Day was held yesterday and the 5/6 students showed that they LOVE a good costume! From a collection of colourful "Little Miss" characters, to a Minion, Luigi (amazing, Mr Purdon!) and a very large, inflatable dinosaur, the senior level really got into the celebration of books and book characters.
Another activity that has become a regular part of our Book Week celebrations here at SPS, is the daily reading by senior students to the whole school of some of the CBCA short-listed books. Every year, a small group of students overcome their nerves to read over Webex, while every grade listens and watches a Powerpoint of selected picture storybooks. This year, we thank Summer, Piper, Jake, Bodhi, Dante, Noah, Hannah, Harmony and James R for sharing these books with the school. They all did a brilliant job!
