Teaching & Learning

Brad Dupuy

This year, we have included a Teaching and Learning Page in our Primary Post.

This will provide you with updates on what is taking place across our school and, more broadly, across the Victorian Education Department.

What is VTLM 2.0?

VTLM 2.0 (Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0) is the approach used in Victorian government schools to support high-quality teaching and learning. It is based on strong research about how children learn best. The model focuses on clear teaching, supportive learning environments, and helping students practise, remember and apply what they learn. VTLM 2.0 helps ensure all students are supported to grow, achieve and succeed at school. We are working very hard at WPS to implement this with fidelity and impact.

Staff Learning in Action

Earlier this week, on our start-of-school Curriculum days, staff engaged in professional learning focused on the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0, with particular emphasis on Explicit Instruction.

Importantly, staff experienced the learning the same way our students do, through clear learning intentions, worked examples and lots of opportunities to respond. Mini whiteboards were used to check for understanding in real time and to agree on engagement norms, including pair–share, which supported active participation and collaborative thinking. These strategies support clarity, engagement and success for all learners.

Alongside this, we were pleased to launch our new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program. The program provides a clear, sequenced approach to building students’ skills in self-awareness, self-management, relationships and responsible decision-making. As with our academic learning, SEL will be taught explicitly and reinforced consistently to support student wellbeing and positive learning behaviours across the school.

Congratulations to the winners of our Music Dance Experience contest, with Mr Pain going back-to-back in 2025 and 2026.

We look forward to the positive impact this combined focus on effective instruction and student wellbeing will have for our students and community.
