Koala Classroom

A big shout out to a newest member of the Koala class. Malakai has settled in seamlessly!Â
Literacy
The Koala class has been exploring the texts: The Wild Guide to Starting School and Whoever You Are. These stories are a fantastic way to support our students as they embark/continue on their own school journey. Through the book, children have been learning about school routines, feelings, and making new friends, in addition to discussing how everyone is different but all feel emotions in the same way - all important parts of starting school in Kindergarten and Year 1.
Â
The text’s lively language and colourful pictures help students build vocabulary and understand how stories work, including characters and event sequences. We’ve also been encouraging the children to share their own ideas and experiences, which helps develop their speaking and listening skills.
Â
By connecting with these stories, our students are gaining confidence and becoming excited about learning and growing together. We look forward to continuing this journey with them throughout the year!
Maths
Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students are building strong foundations in number sense and place value.
Â
Our Kindergarten learners are exploring numbers to five and ten through engaging activities such as counting collections, representing numbers on five-frames, matching numerals to quantities, and comparing sets. They are also learning to add ‘one more’ to a collection and developing confidence in reading and writing numerals.
Â
Year 1 students are extending their counting skills up to 120 and starting to understand two-digit numbers through the use of ten-frames and base ten materials. They are learning to bundle ones into tens and represent numbers using number bonds and place value charts.
Â
This hands-on approach helps students develop a deep understanding of numbers and prepares them for further mathematical learning throughout the year.
