Who is responsible for what in Australia? Our students have been exploring this big question as they unpacked the roles of local, state and federal governments. From rubbish collection and maintaining local parks, to running schools and hospitals, and making national laws about defence and immigration, students eagerly shared and debated their ideas. They then put their knowledge to the test using the Three Levels of Government Game from the Parliamentary Education Office, dragging and dropping responsibilities into the correct level of government. One surprising discovery that sparked a lot of interest was learning that Australia Post is a federal responsibility. Marc was particularly engaged and took his learning even further, independently researching and discovering that it is a federal offence to open or temper with someone else’s mail; with penalties that can include significant fines or even up to five years’ imprisonment. It has been wonderful to see such strong engagement, curiosity and critical thinking as our young citizens deepen their understanding of how Australia is governed.

This week we celebrated Shrove Tuesday, A.K.A Pancake Day! We had a day full of fun and excitement and, well, pancakes! We did special activities to do with Shrove Tuesday, such as:
The highlight of the day was was pancakes! The toppings we had were jam, butter, sugar, and lemon. It was great! I think most people were just eating the lemon though, instead of actually putting in on their pancake! This was the best day ever!
