STEM News - Term 1, 2026
Â
Welcome to a new year of STEM learning! We are excited to begin 2026 with engaging, hands-on STEM units that encourage curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving across all year levels.
In Semester 1, STEM learning will integrate Science (Chemistry and Physics) with the Design Process, allowing students to first build scientific understanding and then apply this knowledge to design and create solutions to real-world problems.
Below is an overview of what each year level will be exploring in Term 1.
Â
Prep
Â
Prep students will begin their STEM lessons in Week 3, exploring different materials and their properties through hands-on investigations. Later in the term, students will apply their learning by using materials to solve simple design challenges inspired by familiar fairy tales, encouraging imaginative thinking and early problem-solving skills.
Â
Year 1/2
Â
Year 1/2 students will explore how materials can change and how these changes affect their suitability for different purposes. They will investigate bending, twisting, stretching, and combining materials before applying their learning to design and build a bridge. This unit supports students in connecting scientific understanding with creative engineering solutions.
Â
Year 3/4
Â
Year 3/4 students will conduct experiments to explore the states of matter and how materials can change between solid, liquid, and gas. Using this knowledge, students will apply scientific thinking to design a no-cook, nutritious meal by the end of the term, considering healthy choices and suitable ingredients.
Â
Year 5/6
Â
Year 5/6 students will investigate the properties of materials and be introduced to the concept of particles, including their arrangement and motion. Students will examine everyday objects, identifying which materials are used, why they are suitable, and how their use impacts the environment. The unit will culminate in students following the design and production process to design, produce, and evaluate a product made from natural materials that could replace a synthetic alternative, with a focus on sustainability.
Â
We look forward to another exciting year of discovery and innovation in STEM and canât wait to share studentsâ learning as the term progresses.
