Kinder/Year 1

During the second half of the term, our unit of learning in English was called The World in my Kitchen. Recipes are a very different-looking text from what we’ve been learning to write, as they incorporate lists and numbered steps. These also require ‘command sentences’ that always begin with a bossy verb. Whilst learning to write procedures, we read stories from other lands about cooking and integrated our Geography learning about our world's neighbours. Each week featured a different country, so we prepared dishes from Fiji, the USA, China, and India. We learned about the key differences in our meals and ingredients, as well as how meals are prepared and eaten in other countries. For instance, we found it fun to tap three fingers on the table to gain the attention of wait staff, as they do in China; we were amazed that burping is a sign of enjoyment and gratitude to the chef, and that is polite in India! In our photos, you will see us partaking in a Chinese dim sum feast (dim sum means little pieces) and an Indian feast where we used our hands. Oh, what fun it would be to travel and experience these foods in another country!
