Excursion to Melbourne SEA LIFE Aquarium

In the middle of this term, students from Year 10 Numeracy and the Year 9 Marine Studies groups at John Fawkner College took part in an excursion to the Melbourne SEA LIFE Aquarium.

The visit was designed to strengthen links between classroom learning and real-world experiences. For the Year 10 Numeracy students, who are currently working on the Merri Creek Conservation Project, the excursion provided a chance to see how mathematical skills such as measurement, data analysis, and problem-solving, connect with environmental conservation and sustainability. Joining with the Marine Studies group also allowed students to share knowledge and perspectives, enriching the experience for everyone.

Throughout the day, students explored the biodiversity of Australia’s marine environments, learning about:

  • Conservation efforts to protect aquatic ecosystems,

  • The importance of habitats for marine life survival,

  • The challenges and solutions involved in protecting endangered species.

Students engaged fully in all activities, actively answering questions and interacting with the guided tour with curiosity. We are proud of the students that demonstrated leadership and independence, showing maturity in the way they conducted themselves and being consistently respectful to others around them throughout the visit.

The excursion was a great success, leaving students inspired by the rich marine life they encountered and motivated to continue their work on conservation, both in their projects and in the broader community. A massive thank you to the staff members who helped making this day possible.
