Term 3 2025

Please keep returning the take home books so we can organise them for next term. We will be using a fluency passage instead given out in week 8.

School Concert - Tuesday 16th September. Students are required for the day and night performance.

Learning

Numeracy

Our young mathematicians have been diving into the fascinating world of shapes and patterns.

Developing pattern sense is more than just recognising what comes next. It’s about:

  • Seeing structure in chaos: Children begin to notice regularities and rules.
  • Making predictions: They learn to anticipate and reason about what might happen next.
  • Building algebraic thinking even in Foundation. Understanding patterns lays the groundwork for future concepts like number sequences and equations.

When children can describe, extend, and create patterns, they’re not just doing maths, they’re thinking like mathematicians. We explored our playground and went on a shapes hunt. The students were fascinated with how many shapes they could find in our environment. According to the Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics – Foundation Level, students are encouraged to:

  • Sort, describe and name familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects in the environment.
  • Explore and recognise patterns, including repeating patterns and growing patterns.

These experiences help children build spatial awareness, logical reasoning, and the ability to make predictions. These skills that are essential not just in maths, but in everyday life.

Literacy

In our recent literacy lessons, students have been learning about the “magic e” rule, when to use a 'k or c' at the beginning of words and have moved onto the 'floss rule'

The 'floss' rule: when a one syllable word with a short vowel ends in a f, l, s or z you double the last letter.

  • Eg. stuff, boss, grill, jazz

Heart words

This week we have been learning the heart words 'what' and 'come'.  We have discussed how 'what' is a question word and have been extending ourselves by putting it in a sentence.

Information Texts

Students are loving immersing themselves in the knowledge information texts are providing. We have focused on sharks and crabs so far. We are learning about the features of an information text, how to create a labelled diagram and are loving writing facts about animals. We even made a fun poster with our facts about crabs! We are describing the animals with adjectives, detailing where they live, what they eat and interesting facts!

Visual Art- please see 'Specialist Happenings for an update on our exciting sail Project!

Kind regards,
