Specialist Happenings

Visual Arts

It has certainly been a busy time in the art room. Some of the year 5 and year 3 students have been busy helping me with props for the school production. It has been a huge whirlwind of paint, poscas and fun!

Year 6 are still going on with their sustainable fashion work and have been enjoying it every step of the way.

We are happy to announce that we are completing a school mural with artist Rox Martyn. All students in year 3-6 will be participating in both design and completion. The year 6 students have already helped Rox in generating ideas and have done a fantastic job of conceptualising what inclusivity means to them.

Ms H will be updating everyone on the progress of this project soon!

Royal Brighton Yacht Club 150th Birthday Celebration Sail Project

Our sail decorating is almost complete and ready to be put on a yacht  ready for the launch of the sailing season on Saturday 4th October. Our very creative students have each designed and drawn a 'superhero of the sea'. We are excited for the launch- all SEPS families are invited to visit Brighton Yacht club between 9-11 am and see all the sails from Bayside schools, grab a sausage from the sausage sizzle and enjoy the sailing spectacular at 11am. We would love to see you there. Please RSVP via compass/Trybooking no later than 1pm, Monday 15th September.

Here are 2C celebrating our fabulous Yayoi Kusama inspired sail!

Keep creating!

Mandarin

This week, our Preps students have been making fantastic progress in learning to write Chinese characters! This week, they have been practising family member words and are becoming more confident at writing them on their own.

The characters we are focusing on are: 爸爸 (bàba) – Dad,  妈妈 (māma) – Mum, 哥哥 (gēge) – Older brother, 姐姐 (jiějie) – Older sister, 弟弟 (dìdi) – Younger brother, 妹妹 (mèimei) – Younger sister

It has been wonderful to see our Preps take pride in their handwriting as they learn to recognise and write these important words for their families! 💖

Our Grade 1/2 students have been continuing their learning on the topic of weather. This week, they are now able to describe the weather for today (今天 jīntiān), tomorrow (明天 míngtiān), and yesterday (昨天 zuótiān).

Students practised how to read, say, and write weather sentences in Chinese characters.

It’s exciting to see them combining their vocabulary with time words to make complete sentences in Mandarin!

This week, our Grade 5/6 students have been extending their skills in Mandarin by learning how to describe animals in more detail. They can now use both colours and body features to write full descriptive sentences. For example, the tiger is orange and black colours, it's mouth is white, the tail is very big. It likes to eat beef.

It’s been wonderful to see students becoming more confident in writing creative and detailed sentences that bring animals to life in Mandarin!

You are all amazing!

Science

The students have focussed on: -

Foundation - Movement

Our young scientists have continued to learn about movement, including thinking about all of the vehicles that need wheels and to start to consider whether movement involves the force push or pull.

Level 1 & 2 - Mixtures

This week, Level 1 and 2 have continued to focus on mixtures as different things together but also these things being able to be separated. We have continued to consider the use of conveyor belts as a method of separating things.

Level 3 & 4 - Habitats and Food Chains

Level 3 and 4 have continued to study and model the food chains of different animals. We have also learned about the vocabulary associated with food chains - producers, consumers and decomposers.

Level 5 & 6 - Soils and Erosion

Our senior students have been considering the composition of soils and the impact of weather to create weathering, erosion, transportation and decomposition.
