Gateways @ SKiPPS

Two weeks ago, a selection of students were invited to GATEWAYS a maths program to accelerate young minds. The year 1s, 2s and 3s learnt how to place coordinates on a chart which they thought was very challenging, they also did some logic puzzles.

One of them included Hidto which involved making a path to 36 using a select amount of numbers in a certain order. Another activity was a coordinate game where you had to figure out what the picture was that you were making. One more game was, you had to travel around an island with check points. In order to pass through each checkpoint you had to answer difficult maths questions.

Next was the years 4s 5s and 6s which was a bit different to the younger years. Some students were saying that it was challenging and some said it was almost impossible but everyone had one thing in common. They all loved tessellations, we used a handy tool called a Splat or to use the longer name Splat 3D.

The way they would work is by placing the Splat on the paper and tracing around it then manoeuvring the Splat so it lined up then you would trace around again. By doing this a lot you could make many interesting 3D shapes and fill your page with cubes, rectangular prisms and so many translations. Then the upper year went on to Voronoids which was finding the centre of many dots and turning them into a master centre point.

Overall all the year levels loved GATEWAYS and found at least one thing to bring out of it and to learn and challenge them. If it's finding coordinates or making shapes SKiPPS really enjoyed it and would love to do it again.
